Men's Basketball Holds Off Hunter in OT in MSU Tip-Off Tournament

Montclair, NJ (11/20/09) –  Senior guard Ken Dudley (Willingboro, NJ / Willingboro) scored four points and handed out two assists in overtime while freshman David McDaniel (Plainfield, NJ / Rutgers Prep) added five of his 15 points in the extra session as Montclair State squandered a 19-point halftime lead but recovered for a 77-69 win over Hunter in the second game of the MSU Tip-Off Tournament at the Panzer Athletic Center on Friday evening.

Dudley also finished with 15 points while sophomore Ali Mix (East Orange, NJ / East Orange Campus) and Paul Siljee (Wayne, NJ / Wayne Valley) each added 13 as the Red Hawks (1-0) scored the first seven points of the OT en route to the eight-point victory. Montclair State will face York College (NY) in the championship game at 3:00 pm.

Junior guard Maxwell Dubois (Hollywood, FL / Dillard) had a monster game of 18-points and 19 rebounds for Hunter, which fell to 0-2 with its second straight tough loss against an NJAC opponent. The Hawks, who fell to Rutgers-Newark by four on Tuesday, take on Eastern University in the consolation game at 1:00 pm.

In the first game, senior Elijah Evelyn (St. Albans, NY / WM Dickinson) had 22 points while Marcel Esonwune (Lagos Nigeria / Marist Brothers) added 15 points and 15 rebounds as York (1-1) raced past Eastern University, 83-57. Martin Soaries (South Brunswick, NJ / South Brunswick) had 15 points to lead the Eagles (1-2).

Montclair State led 41-22 at halftime and led 50-32 with 13:17 left in the game before Hunter charged back with a 22-6 run over the next six minutes to get within 56-54 on a layup by Dubois. MSU tried to create a little breathing room as Mix hit two from the free-throw line with 2:37 left for a 62-57 lead. However, Izzy Hoffman (Woodside, NY / Archbishop Molloy) drained a three with 1:24 left to pull Hunter within 62-60.  Montclair would miss a pair of free throws with 57 seconds left leaving the door open for Hunter which capitalized as Dubois connected twice from the charity strip with 39 ticks knotting the game at 62-62.

MSU played for a last shot and missed, but Hunter committed a turnover with three-tenths left giving the Red Hawks one more opportunity. But Dubois knocked away a potential tap-in attempt and the game headed into overtime.

In the OT, Montclair scored the first nine points. McDaniel hit from behind the arc and Dudley sank two foul shots for a 67-62 lead with 3:20 to go. Dudley would added a layup and then fed McDaniel for a bank shot from the left side as MSU went up 71-62 with 2:11 remaining. Hunter refused to go away, trimming the deficit back to 73-69 with 25 seconds to play as Mark Wnukowski (Glendale, NY / Archbishop Molloy) hit the first of two free throws. But the Red Hawks, who went just 14-of-31 from the charity stripe in the game, got three straight free throws from Mix, the final coming with 12 seconds to go as the lead was restored to 76-69.

and Tyrone Prewitt (Trenton, NJ / Trenton) each had four points and 10 rebounds for Montclair, which held a 59-47 advantage on the boards. Siljee added seven boards while McDaniel pulled in five in his collegiate debut.

Rocco Rubino (Brooklyn, NY / Archbishop Molloy) had 12 points for Hunter which got 10 points off the bench from Mark Courtien (Pelham, NY / Pelham Memorial) and seven points and five points from Matthew Collazo (Sunnyside, NY / John Browne).

In the opening game, Evelyn hit three of his five three-pointers in the opening five minutes as York ran out to an 18-4 lead. Eastern would cut the deficit to 18-10 as Soaries hit a short jumped, but Ryan Exum (Bronx, NY / Truman)scored five straight points as the Cardinals went back up by 13 points and led 42-23 at the half.

Nick Hamilton-Lopez (Woodside, NY / Pfeiffer University) had 16 points and five rebounds for York, which shot 53 percent in the first half (15-of-28), including 6-of-12 from behind the arc and finished the game 29-of-60 from the field. York also made 17-of-25 attempts at the foul line.  Omari Phipps (Laurelton, NY / St. John’s Prep) added 10 points.

Jason Reels (Paterson, NJ / Hawthorne Christian) had 12 points and five rebounds for the Eagles, who shot just 38 percent (24-of-63) from the floor. Alex Nelson (Port Republic, NJ / Oakcrest) added eight points and six rebounds.
