Montclair, NJ (12/11/09) – Montclair State places four players on the National Soccer Coaches Association (NSCAA) Division III South Atlantic All-Region Team announced on Friday.
Seniors Joseph Cullen (Clementon, NJ / Highland) was named to the First Team while seniors William Griffin (Bloomfield, NJ / St. Peter's Prep) and Michael Cullen (Clementon, NJ / Highland) and junior back Mike Krol (Howell, NJ / Howell)
was selected Second Team. The All-Region honor is the third for Joe
Cullen while the remaining three standouts each earn their first
accolade by the NSCAA.
The four players were instrumental in helping Montclair State to its fourth consecutive New Jersey Athletic Conference championshp this past season as the Red Hawks posted a 17-2-2 mark, qualifying for the NCAA Division III Tournament for the fourth straight season.
Joe Cullen, who was selected as the Pat Baldiserra Midfielder of the Year by the NJAC, finished the season as MSU's fourth-leading scorer netting 15 points on five goals and five assists. A three-time All-NJAC pick and First-Team ECAC All-Star, Cullen also had three game-winning goals this season and had a goal and assist in the Red Hawks' 4-1 win over Rutgers-Newark in the semifinals of the NJAC Tournament.
Griffin was named the Co-Defensive Player of the Year by the NJAC as he spearheaded a Red Hawk defense that led the NJAC in fewest goals allowed (15), goals against average (0.69), and goals allowed per game (0.71). Griffin also contributed offensively with the biggest goal of his career and MSU's season as he headed in the game-winning goal as Montclair captured the NJAC championship with a 1-0 win over Rowan University.
Michael Cullen was the recipient of the NJAC David Logar Award, given annually to the player who best displays the attributes of leadership and courage. Cullen led Montclair State in goals (10), assists (7) and points (27) in addition to scoring four game-winning goals. Cullen ranks third in the NJAC in points and goals and is fourth in assists.
Krol has started all 21 contests for the Red Hawks and collected two assists - both against Rowan. Krol assisted on the game-winner as MSU upended the Profs, 2-1 on September 19 and then made the pass to Griffin for the lone goal in the NJAC Championship-clinching victory versus Rowan on November 7.
