Balanced Effort Leads Women's Basketball Over Mt. St. Vincent, 71-55

Montclair, NJ (12/15/09) - Sophomore guard Jaime Ericson (Flemington, NJ / Hunterdon Central) scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds while Kisandra Ayanbeku (Brockton, MA / Randolph) added 10 points and eight boards as Montclair State won its second straight with a 71-55 win over Mount St. Vincent at the Panzer Athletic Center on Tuesday evening.

Catherine Cristino (Farmingdale, NJ / Colts Neck) and Rhonda Sharif (Cliffside Park, NJ / Cliffside Park) each had nine points for MSU, which won its second straight improving to 6-4.

Senior forward Courtney Heesemann (New Hyde Park, NY / New Hyde Park) had 16 points and nine rebounds for Mount St. Vincent, which lost for the second time in three outings.

The Red Hawks never trailed in the game and jumped out to a 3-0 lead as Ericson drained a three-pointer 1:16 into the contest. Karissa Koerner (Bay Shore, NY / Brentwood) answered with a three-point to tie the game however Montclair scored the next seven points to take control. Ayanbeku started the short run with a layup and Ericson finished off a break before Jamilee Pflug (Clark, NJ / Arthur L. Johnson) hit from behind the arc as MSU went up 10-3 with 15:40 to play.

A second three by Koerner got the Dolphins within 15-11 however Montclair would outscore Mt. St. Vincent 21-8 over an eight-minute span to take it largest lead of the half at 36-19 with 4:28 to got. Sharif had two three-pointers in the run while Kathryn Lamastra (Brick, NJ / Brick Memorial) added four as Montclair went into halftime ahead 38-27.

Jen Mocanu (Middletown, NJ / Middletown North) got the deficit under double digits as she hit a three-pointer early in the second half to make the score 38-30. Ericson though would answer with a three of her own and back-to-back layups by Cristino and Ayanbeku restored the lead to 47-33 with 16:25 remaining.  The Dolphins would only get as close as 11 points the remainder of the way.

Pflug added eight points, five rebounds and five assists while Jackie Berry (Tuckerton, NJ / Pinelands Regional) contributed seven assists and seven rebounds. Lamastra had seven points as the Red Hawks got scoring contributions from 12 different players in the game.

Koerner and Mocanu each had 12 points for Mount St. Vincent. Kara McNish (Hawthorne, NJ / Hawthorne) added four points and six rebounds.

Both teams return to action in the New Year. MSU heads to Arlington, Virginia to take part in the Marymount Holiday Classic. The Red Hawks will face Frankling & Marshall in the opening round on Saturday, January 2 at 5:00 pm. The Dolphins are off until January 5 when the host The Sage College in a Skyline Conference matchup in Riverdale, NY at 7:00 pm.
