Men's Indoor Track Solid at New Balance, DeSchriver Meets

Montclair, NJ (2/7/10) – Senior Eugene Asimou (Livingston, NJ / Livingston) won the shot put with the nation’s best throw at the DeSchriver Invitational while junior Will Brown (Gloucester, NJ / Palmyra) had an NCAA automatic qualifying mark in the 60 meter hurdles at the New Balance Invitational as the Montclair State men’s indoor and field team took part in two separate meets over the weekend.

Asimou set the meet and school record at the DeSchriver meet as he registered a personal best throw of 17.18 meters (56-feet, 4.5-inches). The mark was an NCAA Championship automatic qualifying mark and it was the second time this season that Asimou had accomplished that feat. He also finished eighth in the weight throw with a mark of 14.58 meters (47-feet, 10-inches).

Asimou placed 15th in the same event at the New Balance Invitational held at The Armory in New York. One of just two Division III athletes in the field of competitors, Asimou registered a throw of 15.92 meters to place 15th. Teammate Mario Morrison-Bird (West Orange, NJ / West Orange) the other D3 participant, finished in 28th place at 14.48 meters. Bird was also fifth at the DeSchriver (14.70 meters).

Brown had another outstanding weekend as his time of 8.11 in the 60 hurdles at the New Balance meet earned him an automatic qualifying time for the NCAA, which only conducts a 55 hurdles event at its championship meet in March. The time when converted to 55 meters comes out to 7.59 which would be a provisional mark and .04 off the automatic standard. The defending national champion then placed second in the 55 hurdles at the DeSchriver meet running a time of 7.60.

Adenford Jean-Philippe (Irvington, NJ / Irvington) also competed in both events placing second in the 55 at the DeSchriver meet (7.99) and 35th (8.53) at the New Balance Invitational. Jarman Esperance (Nyack, NY / Nyack) ran 8.80 meters (23rd Place) in the College section of the 60 hurdles at the New Balance Invitational and senior Terry Iavarone (North Arlington, NJ / North Arlington) ran 2:00.00 in the 800 meters.

At the DeSchriver Invitational, Jon Tancer (Montville, NJ / Montville) was 10th in the shot put (13.34 meters) while James Luginsland (Bridgewater, NJ / Bridgewater Raritan) had a pair of Top 20 showings in the weight throw (11.55 meters) and shot put (12.63 meters).

Freshman Terea Hargrove (Springfield, NJ / Jonathan Dayton Regional) finished sixth in the triple jump (13.04 meters) and 18th in the long jump (5.73 meters).

The Red Hawks return to action on Saturday, February 13 as they take part in the CTC Indoor Championships which will be held at Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT.
