York, PA (2/20/10) - Kimberly
Wayson scored the third of her three goals off an assist from Kasie
White with 5:17 remaining as York College squandered and early
four-goal lead but came back for an 8-7 victory over Montclair State in
the season opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon.
Senior midfielder Morgan MacPhee (Toms River, NJ / Toms River East) scored four times for Montclair State, which rallied from a 5-1 deficit during the first half.
York
jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first six-plus minutes as Foy scored
unassisted at 28:55 and Meaghan Doak connected off a free-position
attempt. Sophomore Jessica Curran (Yorktown Heights, NY / Lakeland)
fed MacPhee for MSU's first goal with 15:25 left however York would
score the next three to take a 5-1 advantage. Ashley Kanzler began the
run with an unassisted goal and White and Wayson each scored as the
Spartans led by four with 9:49 to play before half.
Kayla Henderson (Landing, NJ / Roxbury) and Lauren Adams (Jackson, NJ / Jackson Memorial)
scored 30 seconds apart to pull MSU within a pair of scores however
Wayson's second goal of the half - on a man-up advantage gave the
Spartans a 6-3 lead at the break.
Foy would extend
that lead 3:05 into the second half as she scored off a free-position
attempt. Montclair struck back as McPhee found the back of the net
twice, the second with 24:21 to play as the Red Hawks got within 7-5. Kristin Quigley (Mount Laurel, NJ / Lenape)
brought Montclair even closer as she scored with a man advantage with
15 minutes left and MacPhee capped the comeback with her fourth as the
game was knotted at 7-7 with 14:23 left.
Solid
defensive effort would keep the score that way as only three shots were
taken over the next nine miuntes - all by York as Montclair freshman
goalkeeper Tiffani Henderson (Landing, NJ / Roxbury)
stopped all three attempts. However it was the fourth shot that proved
to be the difference as the Spartans escaped with the one-goal win.
Tiffani Henderson finished with five saves in her collegiate debut as
the teams were nearly deadlocked in every statistical category. Kayla
Henderson had four draws while Quigley, Cora Delfini (New Egypt, NJ / New Egypt) and Jamie Hudacko (Montville, NJ / Montville) each forced a pair of turnovers. Hudacko, Delfini and Ashley Krzysik (Landing, NJ / Roxbury) had three ground balls apiece.
York outshot MSU 21-20 and also held a 24-22 edge in ground balls.
Montclair won the draw control battle, 9-8.
