Fourth-Quarter Rally Against Muhlenberg Falls Short for Men's Lacrosse
Junior midfielder Robert Sinicola (North Caldwell, NJ / West Essex) netted a two goals and three assists for Montclair, which fell to 1-1 on the season. The contest was a rescheduled game that was postponed due to the heavy snowstorm Thursday and Friday.
Muhlenberg’s offense hurt Montclair State early, as sophomore Alex Ardolino scored on a feed from classmate Clint Watkins just 2:43 in. Six minutes later Watkins expanded the lead to 2-0 when the Montclair State defense left him a wide-open path to the goal and he converted.
The Red Hawks tied the score on two tough-to-swallow goals, finding the back of the net in the closing seconds of the first quarter and then just 44 seconds into the second as Bonner netted both goals. But the Mules tallied the next three, taking a 3-2 lead on a goal by junior Brent Siebold and going up 4-2 with 7.5 seconds left before halftime on a rebound goal by sophomore Chase Nadell.
After a great play by freshman Jack Reilly to save a loose ball near midfield, Siebold fired a bullet from near the edge of the box to make it 5-2. Montclair State responded four minutes later as Tyler Meth (Basking Ridge, NJ / Ridge), the Skyline Player of the Week, but Brant then scored a rare goal for a long-stick defender, picking up a rebound and burying a shot.
Senior Ari Jacobson found the back of the net to make it 7-3, but the Red Hawks scored just 36 seconds later as Meth buried one into the back of the net for a man-up tally. Muhlenberg led 7-4 after three quareter.
Corey Aferiat netted an extra-man goal with 13:35 to playin the fourth, seemingly putting the game out of reach. But Montclair State, as Muhlenberg did in the teams’ game last year, stormed back, scoring twice in the final minute to pull to within one. Sincola scored on an unassisted goal with 50 seconds left and Bonner’s third of the game made the score 8-7.
MSU would then win the ensuing faceoff however it couldn’t get another scoring chance and the Mules held on for the heart-racing win.
Meth finished with two goals for MSU, which got 12 saves from senior goalkeeper Andrew Rosado (Elmwood Park, NJ / St. Joseph’s (Montvale)). Face-off specialist Marc Guido (North Caldwell, NJ / West Essex) was outstanding as he won 15-of-17 faceoffs and added five ground balls. Richie Lachner (Flemington, NJ / Hunterdon Central) posted a team-high six ground balls with senior Patrick Ferry (Clifton, NJ / Clifton) getting four along with three caused turnovers.
The Red Hawks return to action on Saturday, March 6 as they travel to Carlisle, PA to face Dickinson College at 1:00 pm.
