Montclair, NJ (3/10/10) – Junior midfielder Lindsey Parent (Cinnaminson, NJ / Cinnaminson) scored off an assist from senior Kristen Schuster (Centereach, NY / Centereach) with 2:10 remaining which proved to be the difference as FDU-Florham spoiled the home opener for Montclair State with a 9-8 victory at Sprague Field on Wednesday evening.
Parent finished with three goals for the Devils, who picked up their first win of the season squaring their record at 1-1.
Sophomore midfielder Cora Delfini (New Egypt, NJ / New Egypt) scored three times and added an assist for Montclair State, which fell to 1-3 on the season.
FDU-Florham took a 1-0 lead, but Montclair scored three times in 2:11 span, including twice in 21 seconds to take a 3-1 lead. Kayla Henderson (Landing, NJ / Roxbury) scored off an assist from Morgan MacPhee (Toms River, NJ / Toms River East) with 22:33 left to get the Red Hawks on the board. Delfini set up freshman Kailee Beal’s (Succasunna, NJ / Roxbury) with 20:57 remaining and then added one of her own at 27:22 as Montclair State led 3-1.
But the Devils kept MSU out of the net for the next 27:20 of the game while scoring four goals to take a 5-3 lead with just over 23 minutes to play in the second half. Delfini snapped the streak for the Red Hawks, but FDU-Florham countered with two goals, including a man-up tally with 17:43 to play by junior Erika Depelteau (West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro North) that made the score 7-4.
and MacPhee each scored to pull Montclair State within 7-6 with 13
minutes left but Sara Franckowiak (Flemington, NJ / Hunterdon Central)
scored for the Devils with 7:42 to go as FDU-Florham led 8-6.
MacPhee and Delfini scored 45 seconds apart on free-position attempts to tie the game at 8-8 with 3:13 left. Ashley Schlindwein (Cinnaminson, NJ / Cinnaminson) gained possession on the ensuing draw for FDU-Florham and the Devils moved the ball around until Schuster found Parent in front for the eventual game-winning goal.
Montclair State would get a last chance as Lauren Adams (Jackson, NJ / Jackson Memorial) appeared to tie the game with 1:10 remaining scoring on a free-position attempt. But the goal was disallowed as Adams' follow-through took her into the crease nullifying the goal.
FDU-Florham then took possession and made a successful clear and was able to run out the remaining time for the one-goal victory.Henderson finished with two goals and four draw controls for Montclair State. Freshman Tiffani Henderson (Landing, NJ / Roxbury) made nine saves for the Red Hawks, who won 12 of the 18 draws in the game. Delfini collected a team-best five ground balls.
The Red Hawks are now off until Saturday, March 20 as they open up Skyline Conference play at home. Montclair hosts Mount St. Vincent at Sprague Field beginning at 4:00 pm.
