Baseball Batters its Way Past John Carroll, 20-12

New Concord, OH (3/27/10) - Senior centerfield Michael Boggi (Towaco, NJ / Montville) went 4-for-6 with a home run, two doubles and three RBI while senior rightfielder Scott Evangelist (Northfield, NJ / Holy Spirit) was 4-for-6 with four RBI as Montclair State pounded out 24 hits and scored nine times over its final two at bats for a 20-12 victory over John Carroll as Muskingum College on Saturday afternoon.

Freshman first baseman Jason Chesterman (Bloomfield, NJ / Bloomfield) had two hits and three RBI as the Red Hawks won their second straight improving to 7-4 on the season.

Montclair trailed early as the Red Hawk surrendered three runs in the top of the first inning only to erase that in the bottom half with three runs. Andrew Himmelfarb (Nyack, NY / Nyack) singled with one out and scored as Evangelist doubled to right field. After an out, Boggi launched his first home run of the season as the game was tied at 3-3.

Jay Bionde’s (Pompton Plains, NJ / Pequannock) RBI single in the fourth put MSU ahead 4-3 however John Carroll tied the game in the fifth on a double-play ground ball.

The Red Hawks then broke the game open with four runs on five hits in the bottom of the fifth. Chesterman plated the first run with a double and Adam Bergman (Berkeley Heights, NJ / Gov. Livingston) followed with a double of his own for a 7-4 lead. Mike Ercolano (Vernon, NJ / Vernon) connected on the third double of the inning for Montclair driving in a run before Mickey McGraw (Morristown, NJ / Morristown) singled to center scoring Ivan Rodriguez (Newark, NJ / East Side) with the final run.

Kevin Bond (Cedar Grove, NJ / Cedar Grove) doubled in two runs in the sixth and Boggi’s second two-base hit plated a third run as Montclair extended the lead to 11-4 in the sixth.

John Carroll battled back with four runs in the top of the seventh, however MSU put those right back on the board in its half. Evangelist stroked a two-run double with two out. Himmelfarb crossed the plate on a wild pitch and Scott Glozzy (Hackettstown, NJ / Warren Hills) singled in a run as the Montclair lead was 15-8.

Another four-run John Carroll rally in the eighth closed the gap to 15-12, but the Red Hawks scored five times in the eighth to put the game out of reach. Bionde singled in the first run and Evangelist added another. A throwing error allowed Bionde to cross home plate before Chesterman tripled in two runs.

Senior righthander Will Traverso (Verona, NJ / Verona) picked up the win in relief, his first decision of the year (1-0).

McGraw was 3-for-4 for MSU while Bionde, Bond and Ercolano had two hits apiece.

MSU closes out its Ohio weekend trip as they head to Marietta to face Marietta College on Sunday, March 28 beginning at 1:00 pm.
