Little Falls, NJ (4/2/10) – Senior rightfielder Scott Evangelist (Northfield, NJ / Holy Spirit) drove in three runs while Adam Bergman (Berkeley Heights, NJ / Gov. Livingston) belted a solo homer to back the performance of sophomore lefthander Sean Hille (Edison, NJ / St. Joseph’s (Metuchen))
as Montclair State won its fourth straight knocking off Rutgers-Newark,
6-4 in an NJAC contest at Yogi Berra Stadium on Friday afternoon.
Junior shortstop Jay Bionde (Pompton Plains, NJ / Pequannock) had three hits for Montclair State, which improved to 9-4 overall, 2-0 in the NJAC.
Senior third baseman Joe Furnaguera (Springfield, NJ / Jonathan Dayton) belted his fifth home run of the season and finished 3-for-4 with two RBI for the Scarlet Raiders, who dropped to 6-12 on the season, 0-1 in the NJAC.
The Scarlet Raiders jumped out to four-run lead early. Anthony
Yeswita singled to open the second inning before Furnaguera blasted a
pitch over the left field fence to give Rutgers-Newark a 2-0 lead. Matt
Connors would add the third run of the inning as he singled to center
scoring Anthony Palladino.
Rutgers-Newark would add another run in the third. Patrick Reitmeyer (Kearny, NJ / St. Mary’s (Rutherford)) bunted his way on with a base hit and moved to second as the throw got away. He would go to third on a ground out and scored as Hille uncorked a wild pitch making the score 4-0.
Montclair would get back into the game in the bottom half of the third. The Red Hawks loaded the bases on a pair of walks and a single. Evangelist then ripped a singled to right center scoring Mickey McGraw (Morristown, NJ / Morristown) and Bionde as the Red Hawks cut the lead to 4-2. Kevin Bond (Cedar Grove, NJ / Cedar Grove) then smacked a single driving in Andrew Himmelfarb (Nyack, NY / Nyack) as MSU trimmed the deficit to 4-3.
That’s the way the game stayed until the fifth when Bergman drove a
pitch down the rightfield line that just cleared the top of the fence
for his first round-tripper of the year as Montclair knotted the game a
Meanwhile Hille settled down as he would eventually pick up his fourth win of the year (4-0). The lefty gave up just three hits and allowed four base runners after the fourth inning and finished with nine strikeouts before leaving with two outs in ninth. Senior righthander Will Traverso (Verona, NJ / Verona) came on to recorded the final out for his first save of the year. Lefty Billy Cerruti (Oceanport, NJ / Shore Regional) took the loss falling to 1-3.
With Hille back on track, Montclair State would get the eventual winning runs in the seventh. Himmelfarb walked to open the inning and Evangelist drilled a pitch to left center for a triple putting the Red Hawks up 5-4. After a ground out that kept Evangelist on third, Michael Boggi (Towaco, NJ / Montville) lofted a sacrifice fly for the final run.
Both teams are in action with 11:30 am NJAC doubleheaders on Saturday, April 3. Montclair State hosts Rowan University while the Scarlet Raiders are on the road at Campbell’s Field to take on Rutgers-Camden.
