Late-Inning Offensive Surge Pushes Baseball Past Keystone, 10-5

LaPlume, PA (4/13/10) – Freshman third baseman Matt Moreno (Park Ridge, NJ / Park Ridge) drove in three runs while junior designated hitter Mike Ercolano (Vernon, NJ / Vernon) belted a two-run home run as Montclair used a late-inning offensive surge to post its fifth straight win as the Red Hawks topped Keystone College, 10-5 on Tuesday afternoon.

Senior lefthander John Masklee (Totowa, NJ / Seton Hall Prep) pitched six innings to earn his third win of the season as the Red Hawks moved to 14-7 on the season.

MSU trailed 2-0 heading into the top of the fifth when it tied the game with a pair of runs. Moreno singled with one out and moved to second on an error before scoring on an RBI single by Mickey McGraw (Morristown, NJ / Morristown). After Jay Bionde (Pompton Plains, NJ / Pequannock) was hit by a pitch, Andrew Himmelfarb (Nyack, NY / Nyack) tied the game at 2-2 on a single to right field.

Keystone would grab the lead back in the bottom of the fifth, however MSU responded with three runs in the sixth. Kevin Bond (Cedar Grove, NJ / Cedar Grove) and Jason Chesterman (Bloomfield, NJ / Bloomfield) each singled to put runners at the corners. Moreno followed with a base hit to right scoring Bond with the tying run. Moreno was thrown out at second trying to advance on the play, but Ercolano kept the inning goal as he blasted a two-run shot to left fiving Montclair a 5-3 lead. It was Ercolano's second home run of the year.

The Red Hawks would tack on three more runs in the seventh. Michael Boggi (Towaco, NJ / Montville) delivered an RBI single and Scott Evangelist (Northfield, NJ / Holy Spirit) scored on a wild pitch. Adam Bergman (Berkeley Heights, NJ / Gov. Livingston) plated the final run with a ground out as Montclair led 8-3.

A Keystone run in the bottom of the eighth trimmed the lead back to 8-4 however Moreno singled home two runs in the top of the ninth as Montclair put the game away at 10-4.

Masklee struck out and walked one as he allowed three runs and nine hits in his six innings of work.

Moreno was 3-for-5 while Chesterman and Evangelist had two hits apiece for the Red Hawks.

Montclair State returns to action on Thursday, April 15 as MSU travels to Mahwah, NJ to face Ramapo College in a 3:30 pm NJAC contest at Jeff Maund Field.
