Montclair, NJ (4/14/10) – Junior midfielder Ryan Kloss (Flemington, NJ / Hillsborough)
ignited a four-goal run as 18th-ranked Montclair State used that surge
to hold off Farmingdale State, 12-8 for its eighth straight win in a
Skyline Conference matchup at Sprague Field on Wednesday evening.
Junior attack Robert Sinicola (North Caldwell, NJ / West Essex) scored
three goals and added two assists while senior Taylor Bonner (Old
Bridge, NJ / Old Bridge) netted three goals as the Red Hawks improved
to 9-3 overall this season, 2-0 in the Skyline. It was the 13th
straight regular-season conference victory for Montclair.
Freshman Pete Siemsen (West Babylon, NY / West Babylon) had two goals
and three assists for Farmingdale, which had its five-game winning
streak snapped with the loss. The Rams are now 10-4 overall, 3-1 in the
Skyline.
Montclair State led 5-2 after one period and 8-4 at halftime before the
Rams closed that gap to a goal in the third quarter. Siemsen scored the
first 2:03 into the period and then fed Jimmy Owsinski (Kings Park, NY
/ Kings Park) at the 7:55 mark pulling Farmingdale to within 8-6. Just
over two minutes later, Erick Thomson (Floral Park, NY / Floral Park)
scored from the right side of the cage as the Rams were within one with
4:38 remaining in the period.
The Red Hawks would break that momentum. After defenseman Sean Gilmore (Elmwood Park, NJ / Bergen Catholic)
forced a turnover, MSU quickly moved the ball down the field inside 10
yards where Sinicola found Kloss in front of the cage. Kloss took the
pass with his back turned to the net and flicked a blind back-handed
shot past Patrick Delventhal (Westbury, NY / Holy Trinity) with 1:15 to
go as Montclair led 9-7 after three periods.
The play
sparked MSU as t would score the first three goals in the fourth. Kloss
started it off 66 seconds in as he blistered a shot from 15 yards out
for his second goal and a 10-7 Red Hawks lead. Sinicola then set up Matthew Prongay (Edison, NJ / Edison) on a man-up goal with 10:01 left and Bonner’s third tally with 7:18 to go put Montclair in front 12-7.
Meanwhile the Red Hawk defense tightened allowing the Rams just five
shots over the final 15 minutes while also killing off two
man-advantage opportunities by Farmingdale. Siemsen got the final goal
with 14 seconds left for the 12-8 final.
Tyler Meth (Basking Ridge, NJ / Ridge)
finished with two goals for Montclair with Bonner collecting a
team-high nine ground balls along with a pair of caused turnovers.
Faceoff specialist Marc Guido (North Caldwell, NJ / West Essex) was a solid 19-of-24 with six ground balls. Goalkeeper Andrew Rosado (Elmwood Park, NJ / St. Joseph’s (Montvale)) made seven saves in goals with Mark Glander (Vernon, NJ / Vernon) adding one.
Thomson and Owsinki had two goals apiece for the Rams. Delventhal made
14 saves for the Rams in addition to registering four ground balls. Joe
Ciaravino (Levittown, NJ / Island Trees) had three ground balls and
three caused turnovers.
Montclair outshot Farmingdale, 48-23, including 23-11 in the second half.
Montclair State is back in action on Saturday, April 17 as the Red
Hawks head to Union, NJ to face Kean University in a rematch of the
last two Skyline Championship games. MSU won last year’s title contest
7-6 after falling to the Cougars 8-7 in the 2008 championship game.
Faceoff is set for 7:00 pm. Farmingdale is off until next Wednesday,
April 21 as they too will go to Kean for a 7:00 pm contest.
