Little Falls, NJ (4/20/10) – Junior leftfielder
Jesse Sikorski (Syracuse, NY / Christian Brothers Academy) blasted a
grand slam and finished with five RBI while sophomore righthander Alex
Eliopoulos (Arlington, VA / The Heights School (MD)) struck out 10 over
six innings of work as No. 2 ranked Johns Hopkins recorded its 24th
straight victory as the Blue Jays defeated Montclair State, 13-2 at
Yogi Berra Stadium on Tuesday evening.
Lee Bolyard (Burke,
VA / Lake Braddock) drove in a pair of runs as Johns Hopkins continued
its torrid offensive ways, improving to 31-3 on the season. The Blue
Jays, who knocked off MSU for the sixth straight year, have scored
double-digits 18 times during its impressive winning streak.
Senior rightfielder Scott Evangelist (Northfield, NJ / Holy Spirit) drove
in both runs for Montclair State, which fell for the third time in its
last four games. The Red Hawks are now 16-10 overall.
Johns Hopkins wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as it plated
two runs in the top of the first inning. Chris Huisman (Davidsonville,
MD / Archbishop Spaulding) singled with one out and scored as Bryan
Youchak (Pittsburgh, PA / Vincentian Academy) doubled to left center.
After a fielding error moved Youchak up to third, Sikorski lofted a
sacrifice fly to give Hopkins a 2-0 lead.
The lead was extended to 4-0 in the third on an RBI single by John
Sawrr (Radnor, PA / Conestoga) and a run-scoring ground out by Stephen
Bejsiuk (Moorestown, NJ / Moorestown) before the Blue Jays broke the
game open with a six-run third. James Teta (Centereach, NY/Sachem)
singled and Huisman and Youchak drew back-to-back walks loading the
bases. Dave Kahn (New Hyde Park, NY / Herricks) was hit by a pitch to
force in the first run before Sikorski brought everyone else in with
his ninth home run of the season, a grand slam over the right field
fence as the Hopkins lead grew to 10-0.
The Blue Jays would get one more in the fifth on a bases-loaded walk to
Bolyard before Montclair State finally cracked the scoreboard in the
bottom of the frame. Mike Ercolano (Vernon, NJ /Vernon) singled and went to second on a walk to Mickey McGraw (Morristown, NJ / Morristown). Ivan Rodriguez (Newark, NJ / East Side)
singled to load the bases with one out, however Eliopoulos struck out
the next hitter. Evangelist would come through with a single back
through the middle scoring two as Montclair cut the lead to 11-2.
Hopkins would add single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to complete the scoring.
Eliopoulos picked up the win as he upped his record to 6-0. The righty
went the first six innings allowing six hits and the two runs, walking
four and striking out the aforementioned 10 batters. Sophomore
lefthander Sean Hille (Edison, NJ / St. Joseph’s) took the loss, his first of the year as he fell to 6-1.
Youchak and Teta each had two hits for the Blue Jays, who collected 16 in the contests. Freshman Matt Moreno (Park Ridge, NJ / Park Ridge) had two hits for the Red Hawks.
Montclair State returns to action on Thursday, April 22 as the Red
Hawks host Ramapo College at Yogi Berra Stadium. First pitch of the
NJAC contest is slated for 3:30 pm. Johns Hopkins is back home in
Baltimore on Friday, April 23 for a 3:30 pm contest against Stevenson.
