Montclair State Resident Students Stand Up to Be Counted for 2010 Census

All of the Montclair State University resident students have been accounted for in the 2010 census.

The Office of Residential Education and Services has worked with the U.S. Census staff since the fall semester to verify the information. Kevin Schafer, housing assignments coordinator, said his office ran rosters of all current residents, as of April 1, 2010, within each building for the Census. The Census staff then came to campus and completed a form for each resident.

“The information shared with the Census staff was directory information which was in compliance with the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act therefore the students’ privacy was not violated,” said Schafer. “This is an alternate to sending individual forms that the Census Bureau uses to count residential students.”

The 2010 Census will provide key information that each community relies on to obtain federal and state funding for schools, employment services, parks, and other programs.
