Montclair, NJ (4/21/10) – Junior attack Robert Sinicola (North Caldwell, NJ /West Essex) scored three times and handed out five assists while senior midfielder Taylor Bonner (Old Bridge, NJ / Old Bridge)
tallied three goals and three assists as 18th-ranked Montclair State
captured its third straight Skyline Conference regular-season
championship with a 14-4 victory over SUNY-Maritime at Sprague Field on
Wednesday evening.
Sophomore attack Tyler Meth (Basking Ridge, NJ / Ridge)
added a team-best four goals as the Red Hawks posted their 11th
straight win improving to 12-3 on the season. The victory also gave MSU
the top seed in the Skyline Conference Tournament which gets underway
on Wednesday, April 28. The Red Hawks will host a semifinal contest at
Sprague Field against an opponent to be determined.
Junior attack Alexander Korb (Islip, NY / Islip) had two goals for the
Maritime (5-8), which has already clinched a spot in the Skyline
Tournament. The Privateers have one game remaining with Kean University
on Saturday in a game that will be key in determining the No. 2, 3 and
4 seeds.
The Red Hawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead as Sinicola set up Richie Lachner (Flemington, NJ / Hunterdon Central)
for the first goal of the game at 10:03 before scoring one of his own
off an assist from Bonner with six minutes left. Maritime appeared to
cut the margin in half with 2:47 to play as Stephen Doherty (Yorktown,
NY / Lakeland) scored. However the goal was disallowed after an illegal
stick infraction was called and instead of a 2-1 game, Montclair went
on a man-advantage.
And the Red Hawks seized the
opportunity with a pair of man-up goals. Sinicola found Meth for the
first with 2:40 to play and Bonner connected at the two-minute mark for
a 4-0 Red Hawk lead. Meth connected 18 second left to make it three
scored in a 58-second span as the lead was five. Doherty would get
Maritime on the board with 1:06 left as Montclair State held a 5-1 lead
after one period.
Bonner added his second of the game early in the second period off an
assist from Sinicola. Bonner then returned the favor as he assisted on
Sinicola’s tally 45 seconds later as the Montclair lead was 7-1. Korb
got one back for Maritime with 10:50 to go, but Meth answered 69
seconds after that as MSU led 8-2 at the break.
Ryan Korb (Islip, NY / Islip) would get the first goal of the second
half for the Privateers however Montclair scored the next six tallies,
including back-to-back, behind-the-back goals from Meth and Bonner for
a 14-3 lead with 11:17 to play in the game.
Montclair State took full advantage of its man-up chances in the game converting 4-of-5. Faceoff specialist Marc Guido (North Caldwell, NJ / West Essex) was 12-of-21 on faceoffs with a team-high eight ground balls. Goalkeeper Andrew Rosado (Elmwood Park, NJ / St. Joseph’s (Montvale)) made six saves in three quarters of play before giving way to Mark Glander (Vernon, NJ / Vernon), who stopped one shot. Defensemen Patrick Ferry (Clifton, NJ /Clifton) and Anthony Dzienkiewicz (Jackson, NJ / Jackson Memorial) each forced three turnovers for MSU.
Colin Gallagher (Minneapolis, MN/Westhill) had nine saves for the
Privateers with Keith Messina (West Sayville, NY / Sayville) collecting
three. Steven Tonn (Wantagh, NY / Wantagh) had six ground balls while
