Women's Lacrosse Rolls Past Kean and Into Skyline Championship Game

Montclair, NJ (4/29/10) – Sophomore midfielder Cora Delfini (New Egypt, NJ / New Egypt) and junior Kayla Henderson (Landing, NJ / Roxbury) each scored five goals as top-seeded Montclair State scored the first seven goals and raced to an 11-goal halftime lead before finishing off a 20-9 victory over No. 4 seeded Kean University in the semifinals of the 2010 Skyline Conference Women’s Lacrosse Championship at Sprague Field on Thursday evening.

Jess Curran (Yorktown Heights, NY / Lakeland) and Kailee Beal (Succasunna, NJ / Roxbury) added three goals apiece as Montclair State won its third straight improving to 11-4. The Red Hawks will now host No. 2 seed Ramapo College in the championship game on Saturday, May 1 at 5:00 pm. The winner of the Skyline Conference earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Women’s Lacrosse Championship.

Freshman midfielder Lyndsey Cannon (Delran, NJ / Delran) had four goals and three assists for Kean, which finished its season at 8-10. The Cougars advanced to the semifinals as they downed No. 5 seed Mount St. Vincent, 18-12 in the opening round of the tournament on Tuesday.

Montclair jumped out to a 2-0 lead 1:18 into the contest as Henderson scored twice, the second coming off an assist from Maggie Fallon (Cherry Hill, NJ / Camden Catholic). Delfini scored with 22:11 to play sparking a five-goal run in the span of 2:41. Four of those goals for MSU came on the power-play as Delfini scored twice in that spurt. Lauren Adams (Jackson, NJ / Jackson Memorial) finished off the run on a free-position attempt as the Red Hawks led 7-0 with 19:30 remaining.

Amanda South (Fairless Hills, PA / Conwell-Eagan Catholic) stopped the run with Kean’s firs goal at 13:34 of the period, however Montclair scored three minutes later, this time a player down as Delfini scored unassisted.

A goal by Kean’s Chelsea Davis (Livingston, NJ / Livingston) with 5:18 to play got the Cougars within 10-4, but Montclair closed out the half with a five-goal with two coming on a power-play and two others with a player short. Henderson, Curran, Delfini, Beal and Morgan MacPhee (Toms River, NJ / Toms River East) each had a goal as Montclair State led 15-4 at the break.

MacPhee finished with a goal and two assists along with four draw and three caused turnovers for MSU as the Red Hawks scored eight goals on the power-play in the game and three times down a player. Curran added three ground balls as did Kristen Quigley (Mount Laurel, NJ / Lenape). Alex Scerbak (Clifton, NJ / Clifton) collected three draws and two ground balls.

Goalkeeper Tiffani Henderson (Landing, NJ / Roxbury) made three saves for MSU while Tracy Manella (Haworth, NJ / NV-Demarest) had one.  Montclair outshot Kean, 34-19 and won 22-of-31 draws contested in the game.

South and Davis had two goals apiece for Kean, which got 10 saves from freshman Jules Keeley (Ocean Township, NJ / Ocean Township). Cannon had four draw with Julie Bachovchin (Piscataway, NJ / Piscataway), Stephanie Tocko (Toms River, NJ / Toms River East) and Davis each recording three ground balls.

Montclair State will make its fifth consecutive appearance in the Skyline Conference Championship Game having reached the title contest every year since joining the league in 2006. MSU won the first three from 2006-08 before falling to Farmingdale State in last year’s championship contest.
