I am delighted to take on the role of Executive Director of Alumni Relations at Montclair State University. This is truly an exciting time to be at Montclair State! The University is enjoying national recognition and continues to grow in advancing its commitment to provide quality education to a diverse student body.
As we move forward on our upward trajectory, President Cole has positioned Alumni Relations as a strategic imperative of the University. The University’s ability to achieve its vision for the future will be derived from the accomplishments of, and with the support of, all the constituents who share the University’s commitment to excellence. As alumni of Montclair State, you play an important role in that future.
Moving toward that future, Alumni Relations will partner with our volunteer leadership, alumni, and students to build and strengthen our community. We will look to develop programming that builds upon our strengths and resources, and that is responsive to your needs and interests. As we expand on- and off-campus activities, programs, benefits, and services, we will work to provide you with opportunities for meaningful engagement in the life of the University that build a lasting sense of connection and belonging.
There are many ways to stay connected: Continue your intellectual and professional growth through lifelong learning opportunities, continuing education, or career resources. Invest in yourself and Montclair State by getting involved and connecting with former classmates, fellow alumni, and current students, or volunteering your time and talents to be a mentor or serve on a committee. Visit the alumni Web site at montclair.edu/alumni to learn about upcoming events, to get the latest information on benefits and services, and to keep your contact information up to date.
Having complete and accurate information is critical to this effort. By keeping your contact information up to date, you will receive important information and updates from our office, as well as invitations to the many programs to be planned.
Remember, your connection to Montclair State University lasts a lifetime. You are a member of a successful alumni community that is over 100,000 strong and growing. Whether you graduated this May, more than 50 years ago, or somewhere in between, you remain part of the Montclair State community—a vibrant, thriving community that welcomes and rewards your active participation.
I look forward to meeting you during the coming months.

Moving Forward: a Q & A about Alumni Relations
In the fall of 2008, Phoenix Philanthropy Group was tasked with evaluating the state of the Alumni Relations program and developing a strategic plan for moving forward. Surveys, discussions, and analysis of everything from communications to programs to benefits and services were assessed, and plans are underway to implement the road map drawn up to take our program to the next level. Executive Director of Alumni Relations Jeanne Marano took time out to answer questions and discuss some of the latest developments.
What is the new membership
program?
All graduates of
Montclair State University are now automatically members of our alumni
community. Alumni from all classes, through all decades, are part of one,
non-dues-paying network, and will be able to take advantage of all the benefits
offered. Our goal is to provide opportunities for meaningful participation in
the life of the University that builds a lasting sense of connection and
belonging. Be sure to keep your contact information up to date so that you
receive important updates and invitations.
Toward what end did membership
dollars previously go and how will those initiatives be funded in the future?
Membership
monies went to various alumni programs and services, such as annual
scholarships, beautification projects, and events. The University is committed
to providing for these services and will actively seek additional revenue
sources through gifts, affinity programs, and corporate sponsorships.
Can alumni still contribute
financially to the University?
Yes. The
University continues to rely on the support and generosity of alumni.
Contributions can be made through the Montclair State University Foundation
Annual Fund. A gift of any size is an important way of investing in the
University’s ability to provide the best education possible to current and
future students. To make a gift, contact Barbara Krusko, Director of Annual
Giving, at 973-655-7492 or kruskob@mail.montclair.edu.
Will there be a formal group of
alumni assisting with the alumni initiative?
The Alumni
Association is in the process of being revamped into an Alumni Advisory
Council, whose members will be appointed by President Cole. This council will
serve to advise the University on alumni initiatives and opportunities. It also
will assist in student recruitment, graduate placement, advocacy, student
mentoring, and reputation building.
Will alumni still need an alumni
card?
The Office of
Alumni Relations issues alumni cards upon request. Alumni cards are required
for your discount at the University Bookstore and athletic activities, and for
access to Sprague Library and computer labs on campus. A card is not required
to participate in alumni programs, events, and activities.
How can alumni make sure they
stay connected and receive an alumni card?
Visit the alumni
Web site at montclair.edu/alumni to learn about upcoming events and get the
latest information on benefits and services. Fill out the Update Your Information
form and provide your e-mail address to ensure that you receive regular
communications from the Office of Alumni Relations. You may select the option
to receive an alumni card on the Update Your Information form.
In addition to campus perks, what
other benefits and services are offered to alumni?
Alumni receive
the free monthly electronic newsletter, Connections,
and the Montclair State Alumni Magazine.
In addition, alumni have access to affinity partnerships that provide discounts
and rewards on everything from retailers to entertainment and travel, and life,
auto, home, and renters insurance.
