The Red Hawk football team captured its 17th New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship by defeating Kean University, 14-6. Montclair earned a berth in the NCAA Division III Playoffs advancing to the second round. The Red Hawks finished the year with a 10-2 record tying the school record for wins in a season.
The Montclair State men’s soccer team continues its run of excellence capturing its fourth consecutive New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship. The Red Hawks became the first team since the mid-1980s to win four straight conference crowns. The team also etched its name into the record books for the longest home winning streak in NCAA men’s soccer history. The Red Hawks set a new standard with 44 straight wins at home, a streak that began in 2005.
Six Montclair State athletes earned All-America honors during the 2009-10 academic year. Football player Dominique Dixon became the first Red Hawk player to be named to the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) since 1996 while teammate Chris Merkle was named to the D3Football.com All-America Team. Soccer Player Joseph Cullen was named All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and field hockey senior Melissa Buttray earned the same honor from the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA). Track and Field standouts William Brown (55 meter hurdles) and Eugene Asimou (shot put) received their All-America accolades by virtue of their Top 8 ranking at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship.
Athletes in the Community
Montclair State student-athletes also starred in community service projects, taking part in the annual Holiday Toy Drive and helping out at the Essex County Special Olympics. Montclair State also sponsored “Hoops for Haiti,” a charity basketball tournament held at the Panzer Athletic Center in April to raise money to help Red Cross relief efforts in Haiti.
A Record All-Academic Team
Montclair State student-athletes continue to excel not only on the playing field, but in the classroom as well. A record 75 student-athletes were named to the 2010 New Jersey Athletic Conference All-Academic Team, which recognizes those student-athletes with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or better.
Montclair State to Host NCAA LACROSSE Championship
Montclair State was selected as the host for the 2012 NCAA Division III Women’s Lacrosse Championship. The national semifinals and finals will be held at Sprague Field on May 19-20, 2012. The event will mark the second time that an NCAA national championship will take place at the University. In 2009, Montclair State hosted the NCAA Division III Softball Championship.
