Montclair, NJ (8/16/10) – The most successful team in
the history of the Montclair State baseball program held its 10-year
reunion on Saturday, August 14th in the place where they enjoyed so
much of their success during its 2000 national championship campaign –
Yogi Berra Stadium. Several team members were honored prior to the
start of the New Jersey Jackals’ contest with the Worcester Tornadoes.
Head coach Norm Schoenig, who would be named NCAA Division III Coach of
the Year, threw out the ceremonial first pitch for the evening as the
group gathered to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of their triumph.
The 2000 Red Hawks put together one of the greatest seasons in program
history. The squad went 42-7-1 setting the single-season mark for wins
in addition to compiling a 17-1 record in the perennial powerhouse New
Jersey Athletic Conference. Montclair would go on to win the NCAA
Division III Mid-Atlantic Regional title and advanced to the Division
III World Series in Grand Chute, WI.
At the World Series, MSU dropped its first game to Cortland however it
rebounded to win the next five games, including a 6-2 win over St.
Thomas (MN) in the championship game that gave Montclair State its third
NCAA Division III crown.
