Williamsport, PA (9/4/10) - Sophomore midfielder Dan Mendoza (Hackensack, NJ / Hackensack) scored early on in the second period which turned out to be the difference as 19th-ranked Montclair State picked up its first win of the season with a 1-0 triumph over host Lycoming College at the Lycoming Kickoff Classic on Saturday.
Junior goalkeeper Anthony Rogic (Boonton, NJ / Morris Catholic) stopped three shots for his first shutout as a Red Hawk as Montclair State improved to 1-0-1 on the year. MSU will face Stevenson in the championship game of the tournament on Sunday, September 5 at 1:30 pm.
Montclair State dominated the shot column in the game as the Red Hawks outshot Lycoming 12-4 in the first half. Despite the advantage MSU was unable to get anything past the goalkeeping tandem of Nial Krach and James Quinn.
That is until the 55th minute when Mendoza went 1-on-1 against Quinn before depositing the ball into the left side of the net for what turned out to be the game-winning goal.
The Red Hawks finished with 23 shots compared to just seven for Lycoming.
