Women's Soccer Clipped by Christopher Newport, 2-1

Norfolk, VA (9/4/10) – Senior defender Nicole Anulewicz (Woodbridge, NJ / Woodbridge) scored the game-tying goal misway through the second half, however Christopher Newport's Dani Gunderson came up with the eventual game-winning goal seven minutes later as the Captains clipped Montclair State 2-1 in the Orthopaedic Associates of Virginia Classic at Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday evening.

Sophomore Rachel Senyszyn (Succasunna, NJ / Roxbury) recorded an assist as the Red Hawks fell to 1-1-1 on the season.

After a scoreless first half, the Captains put the first goal on the board 4:54 into the second period. Elise Haug lofted a perfect corner kick to Annemarie Weaver, who banged home the shot to give Christopher Newport the 1-0 advantage.

Montclair State would answer just under seven minutes later as Senyszyn fed Anulewicz on a run along right side. Anulewicz was able to slip the ball past goalkeeper Meghan Gumbs tying the game at 1-1 with 20:40 remaining. However, Gunderson put Christopher Newport back in front converting a crossing pass from Sam Ciaravino.

Sophomore goalkeeper Marisa Zayac (Jackson, NJ / Jackson Memorial) made eight saves in the loss for Montclair State.

The Red Hawks return to action on Wednesday, September 8 when they host Stevens at the MSU Soccer Park beginning at 2:00 pm.
