Williamsport, PA (9/5/10) - The Montclair State men's soccer team, ranked No. 19 in Division III, suffered its first loss of the season on Sunday as the Red Hawks were clipped by Stevenson, 1-0 in the championship game of the Lycoming Kickoff Classic at Lycoming College.
Despite outshooting the Mustangs 25-5 in the contest, the Red Hawks fell to 1-1-1 on the season with the loss. Sophomore midfielder Dan Mendoza (Hackensack, NJ / Hackensack), senior back Mike Krol (Howell, NJ / Howell)and junior Kevin Zalewski (Parsippany, NJ / Parsippany) were all named to the All-Tournament Team.
Montclair collected 14 shots in the first half, but could not come up with a goal against Stevenson goalkeeper Ryan Flannelly. After being denied by Flannelly twice early on, Zalewski caught a bad break as his shot at 16:55 clanked off the crossbar keeping the game scoreless. MSU would come up empty three more times shots before another bit of bad luck as Krol this time had his attempt hit th crossbar in the 31st minute.
With the game scoreless heading into the 66th minute the Mustangs finally broke through with the game's lone score. Josh Brewer fed John Adamo from the left side. Adamo then desposited the ball into the right corner of the net.
Flanelly, who finished with nine saves in the match, made one more over the final 25 minutes to help preserve the win for Stevenson. Junior goalkeeper Anthony Rogic (Boonton, NJ / Morris Catholic) made a pair of saves for Montclair.
Montclair returns to action on Wednesday, September 8 as its hosts New York City Tech in its home opener at MSU Soccer Park. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 pm.
