Men's Soccer Dominates NYC Tech in Home Opener, 5-0

Montclair, NJ (9/8/10) – Sophomore midfielder Dan Mendoza (Hackensack, NJ / Hackensack) scored the first two goals while senior midfielder Chris Tatro (Somerville, NJ / Somerville) collected the final two goals as Montclair State blanked New York City Tech, 5-0 in its home opener at MSU Soccer Park on Wednesday afternoon.

Senior forward Larry Geraghty (Cranford, NJ / St. Benedict’s Prep) sandwiched a goal in the middle of the other four as the Red Hawks (2-1-1) outshot the Yellow Jackets, 42-3 in the victory.

Sophomore goalkeeper Nelson Restrepo (Queens, NY / Aviation) stopped 13 shots for New York City Tech, which fell to 1-1 on the season.

The Red Hawks dominated from start to finish recording the game’s first 23 shots however they managed just a 1-0 lead at halftime. Restrepo made several outstanding saves in the first 15 minutes, including a stop on a shot by Sean Pauls(Denville, NJ / Morris Knolls) at 13:21. The rebound on the play was then nearly knocked in by Kevin Zalewski(Parsippany, NJ / Parsippany), however defender Brian Adlam (Brooklyn, NY / St. Elizabeth) swept the ball off the back line to keep the contest at 0-0. 

MSU kept up the pressure before finally breaking through at the 38:49 mark of the period. Senior midfielder Mike Krol(Howell, NJ / Howell) lofted a cross from 30 yards off a free kick into the box where Mendoza was able to get a head on it and knock it into the right side of the goal for his second of the season as the Red Hawks led 1-0 at the break.

In the second half, Restrepo made three saves, the last on a shot by Mendoza at 53:07. Off the save, the Yellow Jackets pushed the ball back to the other end of the field where they would get their first shot of the game. Edison Toussaint (Brooklyn, NJ / Coeur de Jesus) broke through along the right side and fired a point-blank shot from 14 yards out that MSU keeper Anthony Rogic (Boonton, NJ / Morris Catholic) snared for what turned out to be the lone shot on goal by City Tech. 

Just over two minutes later, Mendoza extended the lead as he finished off a give-and-go with Sasa Dobrijevic (Lake Hiawatha, NJ / Parsippany) in front for his second of the game. 

Pauls would set up Geraghty for his second of the year as Montclair built a 3-0 lead at 67:36 of the match. Tatro accounted for the final two goals, the last coming with seven seconds remaining. Kazim Uyaroglu (Cliffside Park, NJ / Cliffside Park) and Jon Christensen (Medford Lakes, NJ /Shawnee) assisted on the first tally with Mike Rudden(Kearny, NJ / Kearny) getting the helper on the final score.

Rogic and David Rasmussen (Roseland, NJ / West Essex) combined on the shutout, Montclair’s second of the year.

Montclair State returns to action on Friday, September 10 as MSU faces SUNY Oneonta at 1:00 pm in the Mayor’s Cup Tournament in Oneonta, NY.  The consolation / championship games are slated for Saturday, September 11 against either Whitworth or Widener at 1:00 or 4:00 pm, respectively.
