Box Score

Oneonta, NY (9/11/10) – Sophomore midfielder Dan Mendoza (Hackensack, NJ / Hackensack) scored the game’s lone goal in the 62nd minute as Montclair State knocked off No. 8 Whitworth, 1-0 to capture the Mayor’s Cup Tournament at SUNY Oneonta on Saturday afternoon.

Junior goalkeeper Anthony Rogic (Boonton, NJ / Morris Catholic) made six stops for his second consecutive and third shutout of the season as the Red Hawks improved to 3-1-2 on the year. Mendoza and Rogic were named Offensive and

Defensive Most Valuable Players of the tournament while Mike Krol (Howell, NJ / Howell) and William O’Connor(Wyckoff, NJ / Ramapo) were also chosen to the All-Tournament Team.

After advancing in the opening round in the shootout win over host Oneonta, Montclair was again locked in another scoreless battle with Whitworth as MSU collected just one shot over the first 45 minutes.

But in the second half, Montclair would get the only score it would need at 61:38. Larry Geraghty (Cranford, NJ / St. Benedict’s Prep) took a direct kick and fired a shot toward the net where Mendoza was able to redirect it for his third tally of the season.

Rogic would keep the game at 1-0 as he made three saves in the second half and got a little help in the 74th minutes at Whitworth’s Jesse Retan hit the cross bar.

Whitworth held a 9-5 edge in shots and had six corner kicks to Montclair State’s two.

The Red Hawks are now off until Thursday, September 16 as they open defense of their New Jersey Athletic Conference title against Rowan University at Sprague Field beginning at 7:00 pm. It will be a rematch of last year’s NJAC Championship which MSU won 1-0 to claim its fourth straight league title.
