Purchase, NY (9/12/10) –The Montclair State women's soccer team capped off its weekend at the Valiant Classic as the Red Hawks blanked host Manhattanville, 2-0 on a cloudy and cool Sunday afternoon at GoValiants.com Field. The win evened Montclair's record at 2-2-2.
Freshmen Amanda Pero (Old Bridge, NJ / Old Bridge) and Jenna Carroll (East Brunswick, NJ / East Brunswick)both scored for the visiting Red Hawks, the first goals of their respective collegiate careers. The first-year tandem also combined for four of the team’s eight overall shots and three of its seven shots on target.
The Manhattanville offense, meanwhile, continued to struggle in the loss, as the home team managed just five total shots, four of which reached its target. In all, Montclair State had an 8-5 shot advantage, with each team also taking one corner kick.
After a scoreless first half, the first goal of the match came in the 54th minute, when a quick Red Hawk counter attack and an advantageous bounce broke the ice. Senior Katie Minervini took the ball up the right side and fed a nice through ball to spring Pero, and the freshman fired a shot off the bottom of the crossbar and down behind the goal line for her first collegiate tally.
The score stayed the same until the 81st minute, when another fortuitous carom gave the Red Hawks a second tally. This time it was Carroll who was the recipient of a good bounce, as her blast from the right side of the 18-yard box caromed off the near post and into the back of the net.
The two-goal lead was more than enough for MSU sophomore Marisa Zayac (Jackson, NJ / Jackson Memorial), who picked up her second win of the year by stopping all four shots she faced for the shutout. For Manhattanville, senior Ali Bromson (Suffield, Conn. ) made five saves and allowing only the two goals.
Montclair State returns to action on Thursday, September 16 as the Red Hawks host City College of New York at MSU Soccer Park beginning at 3:30 pm.
