Men's Soccer Pulls Away From TCNJ. 5-1

Montclair, NJ (9/25/10) – Freshman midfielder Dan Mendoza (Hackensack, NJ / Hackensack) scored a pair of goals as Montclair State scored four times in the second half en route to a 5-1 victory over The College of New Jersey at MSU Soccer Park on Saturday afternoon.

Mike Rudden (Kearny, NJ / Kearny), Mike Pytlar (Califon, NJ / West Morris) and Kevin Brown (Wayne, NJ / Wayne Valley) each had goals as the Red Hawks won their third straight while running its unbeaten streak to five with the win. MSU is now 5-1-2 overall, 2-0-0 in the conference.

Junior forward Luigi Moriello (Ewing, NJ / Notre Dame) scored the lone goal for TCNJ which fell to 2-5-1 overall, 1-1-0 in the league.

A slow start in the first half, neither team was able to find the back of the net although each had opportunities. The Lions outshot Montclair 5-4 in the first half however the game remained scoreless until the 39:31 mark when Rudden knocked in a cross from the right side by Jon Christensen (Medford Lakes, NJ / Shawnee) for his first of the year as Montclair led 1-0 at the break.

In the second half, Mendoza extended the lead to 2-0 with his fifth goal 3:50 into the period. However Moriello netted his third of the season 1:17 later as he put in a cross from Ed Kozic (Raritan, NJ / Immaculata) cutting the deficit to 3-1 with 39:53 left in the half.

The goal was the first allowed by Montclair State since a 1-0 loss to Stevenson on September 5, a span of 454:20.

But that would be as close as TCNJ would get as Montclair tallied the final three goals in a span of 14:28. Mendoza started the scoring with his second of the game at 56:47 blasting in a shot 18 yards out on the right side. Pytlar added to the lead just under 10 minutes later with his third of the year bending in a shot from 20 yards out into the right corner. Sean Pauls (Denville, NJ / Morris Knolls) picked up the assist.

Brown accounted for the final MSU goal at 71:15. Paul DeMartinis (Kinnelon, NJ / Kinnelon) lofted a cross from the right side down to within six yards where Brown was able to head the pass in for his first goal of the year.

(Boonton, NJ / Morris Catholic) made five saves for the Red Hawks while sophomore Aaron Utman (Hopewell, NJ / Hopewell Valley) had three for the Lions.

Both teams are back out on the road for their next contests.  Montclair State is at Rutgers-Newark on Wednesday, September 29 while TCNJ is at the other Rutgers University campus in Camden, NJ.  Kickoff for both contest is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
