Hartford, CT (9/26/10) – Senior defender Jessica Murphy (West Long Branch, NJ / Shore Regional)
tied the game with less than eight minutes to go in regulation and then
won it 4:16 into overtime as Montclair State extended its winning
streak to six games with a 2-1 win over 11th-ranked Trinity College on
Sunday afternoon.
Senior Deana Hagel (Fairfield, NJ / West Essex) assisted on the game-winning goal as the Red Hawks are now 6-1 on the year. The Bantams fell to 3-3 with the loss.
After a scoreless first half, Trinity senior Christy Bradley
(Wellesley, Mass.) started off the second frame with a quick goal,
giving the Bantams a 1-0 advantage. With 23 minutes on the clock,
Montclair State came out of a timeout and found themselves in a
one-on-one opportunity with Trinity junior goalkeeper Gina Dinallo
(West Hartford, Conn.), who made a diving deflection on a shot by
Hagel, preserving the Trinity lead.
Hagel would get another chance with 15 minutes remaining on the clock
evading two defenders and rifling a shot past Dinallo, but the goal was
called back, as a penalty was whistled just before the shot.
Montclair would finally get the equalizer with 7:22 remaining in
regulation, tying the game at 1-1 on Murphy’s first goal of the
afternoon and season, forcing the game into overtime.
Early in the overtime period, Bradley nearly ended the game in Trinity’s favor, but Montclair sophomore goalkeeper Megan Bosland (Boonton, NJ / Boonton) made an athletic stretch, stopping the shot with her heel.
The Red Hawks would take advantage of a penalty on the other end and
put the game away on Murphy’s second goal of the afternoon.
Hagel assisted the game-winning goal, setting up Murphy on the
penalty. Bosland finished the game with six saves, while Dinallo made
five stop for the Bantams.
Montclair State returns to action on Wednesday, September 29 as the Red
Hawks host Misericordia University at Sprague Field beginning at 7:00
pm.
