Montclair, NJ (9/29/10) – Junior forward Samantha Sorokas (Plains, PA / Coughlin) scored with 7:09 remaining in the second half as Misericordia University halted Montclair State’s win streak at six with a 1-0 victory over the Red Hawks at Sprague Field on Wednesday evening.
Sophomore goalkeeper Grace Riker (Bridgewater, NY / Mt. Markham) stopped six shots for her third shutout of the season as the Cougars won for the second time in three games improving to 4-5 on the year.
Sophomore goalkeeper Megan Bosland (Boonton, NJ / Boonton) made three saves for Montclair State, which suffered its first loss since falling to No. 9 Eastern University in the season opener on September 1.
Montclair State outshot Misericordia 10-5, but it was Cougars who got the only shot that would matter in the game.
The Cougars had the ball in the MSU circle off a penalty corner, but could not come up with anything. Montclair attempted to clear the ball however it was pushed right back in along the end line to Emily Foley (Hunlock Creek, PA / Northwest). Foley made a backhand pass to the center of the cage five yards out where Sorokas was able to smack the ball inside the left post for her team-best seventh goal of the year and the only score of the game.
Riker made that lead stand up as she made two crucial saves with just over 5:30 left in the game, stopping Melissa Flaherty (Fishkill, NY / John Jay) twice on the right side from two yards out.
Misericordia held the edge in penalty corners, 9-8.
Both teams return to action on Saturday, October 2. Montclair State heads to Schenectady, NY to face Union College at 2:00 pm. Misericordia is home in Dallas, PA for an 11:00 am matchup with Freedom Conference foe DeSales University.
