Wacker Hat Trick Leads Women's Soccer Over Rutgers-Newark, 7-2

Montclair, NJ (9/29/10) – Freshman forward Allison Wacker (Stockholm, NJ / Wallkill Valley) netted a hat trick, including a pair of goals in the first 11 minutes while also recording two assists as Montclair State snapped a three-game losing streak with a 7-2 victory over Rutgers-Newark in a New Jersey Athletic Conference contest at MSU Soccer Park on Wednesday afternoon.

Senior midfielder Katie Minervini (Oceanport, NJ / Shore Regional) scored twice and sophomore forward Rachel Senyszyn (Succasunna, NJ/ Roxbury) had a goal and two assists as the Red Hawks also picked up their first conference victory in the process. MSU moved to 4-5-2 on the season,1-3-0 in the league.

Senior forward Karen Johnson (Nutley, NJ / Nutley) and Thalia Sanchez (Hackensack, NJ / Bergen County Tech) each had goals for the Scarlet Raiders, who fell back to the .500 mark at 4-4-2 overall, 1-1-1 in the NJAC.

Montclair wasted very little time getting on the board –nine seconds to be exact. Off the opening kickoff, Senyszyn picked up the ball,moved through one defender and carried into the top of the box before sliding a pass to Wacker, who then deposited a shot inside the right post for the 1-0 lead. The goal was Wacker’s third of the year and three seconds shy of the fastest goal in Division III history held by St. Norbert’s Sara Gross againstEdgewood in September, 2004.

The Red Hawks had an opportunity to increase the lead four minutes later, however Minervini’s penalty kick went over the crossbar.

Wacker would collect her second goal at the 10:37 mark to give the Red Hawks a two-goal advantage. Jackie McGrath(Vernon, NJ / Vernon) lifted a pass into the top of the box where Wacker ran on to it before letting go a shot that ducked inside the right post again.

The Scarlet Raiders would get a goal back with 13:14 remaining in the opening period. Liana Abreu (Newark, NJ / Science Park) served ball past two defenders to an area on the right just outside the top of the 18. Johnson was able to take possession of the ball and dribbled to within 15 yards before firing a shot to the far left post for her fourth of the year as the score became 2-1.

Montclair would get that goal back with 6:22 to play. Kelly Palmer (Long Valley, NJ / West Morris Central) corralled a clearing pass from 25 yards out and served it back into the six on the left side. Minervini took the pass and fired a left-footed shot across to the right post for her second goal and 3-1 MSU lead at thebreak.

Senyszyn would net her team-leading seventh goal just over 10 minutes into the second half, heading in a cross from Wacker at the left post.

Rutgers-Newark did not go away getting back to 4-2 as Sanchez banged home a rebound for her first goal of the season at64:16.

Montclair State countered that goal with the final threescores as Amanda Pero (Old Bridge, NJ /Old Bridge) headed in a shot at 70:28 while Minervini recorded her secondat 76:08. Wacker got the hat trick with 1:32 remaining.

Sophomore goalkeeper Marisa Zayac (Jackson, NJ / Jackson Memorial) made seven saves for MontclairState, which outshot Rutgers-Newark, 29-11. Junior goalkeeper Danielle Griscom (Pennsville, NJ /Pennsville) stopped 10 for the Scarlet Raiders.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday, October 2 with conference matches. Montclair State heads to Camden, NJ to face Rutgers-Camden at 3:00 pm while the Scarlet Raiders host No. 2 The College of New Jersey under the lights of Alumni Field at 7:00 pm.
