Montclair, NJ (10/4/10) - Freshmen soccer standouts Allison Wacker (Stockholm, NJ / Wallkill Valley) and Dan Mendoza (Hackensack, NJ / Hackensack) were tabbed as the MSU Athletes of the Week for October 4.
Wacker played a key role in helping the Red Hawk women's soccer team pick up its first two conference victories this season as she tallied eight points. Named the NJAC Rookie of the Week, Wacker had a hand in five of MSU’s seven goals in a 7-2 win over Rutgers-Newark scoring three times and assisting on two others. In the win versus the Scarlet Raiders, Wacker got Montclair off to a fast start scoring nine seconds into the game (three seconds shy of the Division III record) and added a second goal by the 11-minute mark. Wacker is currently second on the team in both goals (5) and points scored (14).
Mendoza played a key role in helping the MSU men's team continue its winning ways, assisting on both game-winning goals in victories over Rutgers-Newark and Rutgers-Camden. Against Rutgers-Newark, Mendoza assisted on what turned out to be the game-winning goal in a 1-0 win. Three days later he did it again, this time serving a ball from 25 yards out that turned into the "golden goal" as the Red Hawks topped Rutgers-Camden in double overtime, 2-1. Mendoza is currently ranked second in the NJAC in assists (4) and is third in both goals (6) and points scored (16).
