Peak Performances Presents East Coast Premiere of Crystal Pite’s “Dark Matters”

The East Coast premiere of Dark Matters, Crystal Pite’s dramatic query into the unknown, will be presented by Peak Performances @ Montclair at Montclair State University’s Alexander Kasser Theater, October 21-24.

Inspired by the mysterious qualities of dark matter, the 2009 work begins with a conversation between a Bunraku puppet and its creator. Its second act is an abstracted and intensely choreographed version of the first, which raises philosophical questions about creation vs. destruction and free will vs. manipulation. The original score was created by Owen Belton.

Canadian choreographer and performer Crystal Pite formed Kidd Pivot in Vancouver in 2001. She relocated the company, now called Kidd Pivot Frankfurt RM, to Frankfurt, Germany in 2010. In addition to choreographing for Kidd Pivot, Pite has created new works for Netherlands Dance Theatre, Ballet Frankfurt, Ballet British Columbia, Alberta Ballet, Ballet Jörgen, Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal (where she served as Resident Choreographer from 2001-2004), and several independent dance artists including Canadian dance icon Louise Lecavalier. Kidd Pivot tours nationally and internationally with productions that include Dark Matters (2009), Lost Action (2006), Double Story (2004), and Uncollected Work (2002), created with Richard Siegal.

From 1988 to 1996, Pite was a member of Ballet British Columbia, performing in works by John Alleyne, Serge Bennathan, James Kudelka, David Earle, Barry Ingham, and William Forsythe, among others. She danced in Germany’s Ballet Frankfurt under the direction of William Forsythe and performed worldwide in works such as Eidos:Telos, The Loss of Small Detail, and Endless House. Pite is the recipient of the Banff Centre’s Clifford E. Lee Choreography Award (1995), the Bonnie Bird North American Choreography Award (2004), the Isadora Duncan Dance Award (2005), and the prestigious Rio Tinto Alcan Performing Arts Award (2006).
