Montclair, NJ (10/11/10) - Senior football linebacker Ed Kirschenbaum (Lake Como, NJ / Manasquan) and senior field hockey forward Deana Hagel (Fairfield, NJ / West Essex) were chosen as the MSU Athletes of the Week for October 11.
Hagel is named MSU Athlete of the Week for the second time this year after helping the Red Hawks to victories at Ramapo and home to New Paltz last week. She had a hand in five of MSU’s seven goals in the two games, scoring three times and assisting on two others. She had a goal and assist as Montclair topped Ramapo, 4-2 for its first NJAC win of the season. She then accounted for all three goals as Montclair State defeated New Paltz, 3-1. Hagel, who was named the NJAC Offensive Player of the Week, also moved into fourth on the all-time goals list (34) and eighth for career points (80). Hagel currently ranks third in the NJAC in points (8) and assists (7) and is fourth in goals (23).
Kirschenbaum was named the NJAC Defensive Player of the Week as he played a major role in helping the No. 14/16 Red Hawks to a come-from-behind 30-14 win over The College of New Jersey. He collected 15 tackles, including 4.5 tackles for a loss and 3.5 sacks. Trailing 14-10 at the half, he recorded tackles on the first three TCNJ plays, leading to a punt that set up the eventual game-winning score. Kirschenbaum, who was part of a MSU defensive unit that held the Lions to zero yards of offense in the second half, currently ranks tied for third in the NJAC in tackles for a loss (6.5).
