Women's Soccer Blanked by Richard Stockton, 2-0

Box Score

Montclair, NJ (10/23/10) – Sophomore midfielder Jessica McQuillen (Tabernacle, NJ / Seneca) scored in the first half and sophomore midfielder Dailey Todd (Millville, NJ / Millville) added an insurance goal late in the second as Richard Stockton blanked Montclair State, 2-0 in an NJAC women’s soccer contest at Sprague Field on Saturday evening.

Freshman goalkeeper Sarah Hinkle (Mullica Hill, NJ / Paul VI) made three saves for her third shutout as the Ospreys clinched an NJAC Tournament spot with the victory. Richard Stockton (10-6-2), which has won five of its last seven, improved to 4-3-1 in the NJAC and has 13 points which currently put them in fourth place in the conference (four points ahead of the next team) with one league game remaining on Wednesday, October 27 at home versus Rutgers-Newark.

Sophomore goalkeeper Marisa Zayac (Jackson, NJ / Jackson Memorial) made one save for Montclair State, which fell for the third time in four games, dropped to 6-8-3 on the year. The Red Hawks are currently on the outside-looking-in in the NJAC Tournament race as they sit in eighth place (7 points), however a victory in their final game on Wednesday at Ramapo plus some help could get MSU into the conference tournament for the 12th consecutive year.

Neither team was able to muster much offense in the early portion. Montclair got a header from Jenna Carroll (East Brunswick, NJ / East Brunswick) that Hinkle snared in the 10th minute. Just over six minutes later, Montclair attempted to clear a ball from near the end line on the right side. But the ball caromed off a player and stayed in giving McQuillen an opportunity and she took advantage slipping the ball past Zayac for her fourth of the season and 1-0 Stockton lead with 28:08 left in the first half.

That would be the only real scoring chance each team would get until 15 minutes into the second half. With the ball outside the box, Stockton’s Melissa Eiding (Shamong, NJ / Seneca) riffled a shot from the right side that clanked off the left post before being knocked away by an MSU defender.

Zayac made a stop against Samantha Bean (Manchester, NJ / Manchester) at 64:05 and Hinkle grabbed a Zoe Mandaro(Hawthorne, NJ / Hawthorne Christian) shot at 74:38 to keep the game at 1-0.

The Ospreys would add its insurance goal 67 seconds after the Mandaro attempt as Kiera Hines (Deptford, NJ / Deptford) put through a ball from the right side from 40 yards out. The ball got past several players over the next 20 yards where Todd was able to run onto it and moved in to within 11 yards before flicking a shot to the left post for her fifth tally of the year.

Montclair State outshot the Ospreys, 12-11 in the contest with Richard Stockton holding a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.
