Montclair, NJ (10/24/10) — Junior quarterback Tom Fischer (Livingston, NJ / Livingston) and freshman linebacker Dan Avento (Montvale, NJ / Pascack Hills)were both honored by the New Jersey Athletic Conference on Sunday as they were named the Offensive Player and Defensive Rookie of the Week, respectively.
Fisher becomes the second different Red Hawk to earn NJAC Offensive Player of the Week honors after helping Montclair State remain in sole possession of first place in the NJAC with a 31-3 conference road win at Western Connecticut. In just three quarters of action, he completed 11-of-21 passes for 257 yards and four touchdowns. His scoring strikes of 5, 50, 62, and 37 yards apiece marked the second consecutive week that he threw for four TD passes, while propelling MSU to its 15th straight NJAC win. Fisher currently leads the NJAC in both passing yards per game (206.1), and passer efficiency (167.9).
Avento earns NJAC Defensive Rookie of the Week honors for the third time this season. He recorded 12 tackles, including 10 solo stops for the first double-digit tackle game of his collegiate career. He also forced a fumble in a defensive effort in which MSU held the Colonials to just 174 yards of total offense. Avento currently ranks 15th in the NJAC in tackles with an average of 7.1 per game.
