Montclair, NJ (11/1/10) – Freshman midfielder Brittany Carroll (Kingston, NY / Rondout Valley) tallied a pair of goals in the second half as Montclair State scored three times over the final 35 minutes as the Red Hawks registered a 6-0 victory over Kean (10-6, 3-3 NJAC) in the completion of their suspended game at Sprague Field on Monday evening.
The contest , originally scheduled for September 22, was just past the 27-minute mark with Montclair State (11-6, 3-2 NJAC) holding a 3-0 lead when rain and lightning forced the game to be suspended. It was resumed with 7:53 to go in the first half on Monday evening.
Back on September 22 senior Diana Colombo (Westampton, NJ / Rancocas Valley) gave Montclair a 1-0 lead 1:44 into the contest as she smacked in a shot from eight yards out on the left side, her third of the season. Melissa Flaherty(Fishkill, NY / John Jay) extended the lead to 2-0 just under three minutes later as she knocked in a rebound off a save by Kean goalkeeper Lauren Dobbs (Palmyra, NJ / Palmyra).
Junior Devin McNamara (Mount Royal, NJ / Gloucester Catholic) accounted for the final goal as she scored on a penalty stroke at 24:37.
The Red Hawks took that 3-0 lead into halftime, but quickly added to it 1:15 into the second half. Off a penalty corner,Rebekah Keller (Berlin, NJ / Eastern) slipped a pass to Carroll on the right side of the circle. Carroll then blasted a shot from six yards out for the goal. Carroll, the NJAC Rookie of the Week, struck again 12 minutes later. Taking a long pass from the top of the circle, she moved around a defender to within five yards on the right side again firing another shot through the keeper for her fifth goal in the last two contests.
Freshman Jennifer Tafro (Little Falls, NJ / Passaic Valley) got the final goal, her first career tally, with 7:13 remaining.Michelle Hagel (Fairfield, NJ / West Essex) picked up the assist.
Sophomore keeper Megan Bosland (Boonton, NJ / Boonton) stopped three shots as she and Genevieve Paulin(Hazlet, NJ / Raritan) combined on the shutout, Montclair State’s second of the year. Dobbs have seven saves and Jessica Zelbey (Dover, DE / Dover) one for Kean.
Montclair State outshot the Cougars 19-5 while Kean had a 10-6 edge in penalty corners.
Montclair State closes out its season on Friday, November 5 as the Red Hawks make the short journey to Wayne to face William Paterson at 7:00 pm. Kean are eligible for the ECAC Championship which will be held next week beginning on Wednesday, November 10. The selections for that tournament will be released on Monday, November 8.
