Montclair, NJ (11/22/10) - Junior swimmer Kelly Abner (Glenwood, NJ / Vernon) and senior football linebacker Ed Kirschenbaum (Lake Como, NJ / Manasquan) and were named MSU Athletes of the Week for November 22.
Abner posted two Top 5 finishes and helped two relay teams to Top 3 showings as Montclair State placed fourth at the Golden Bear Invitational at Kutztown University over the weekend. Abner was fourth in the 200 IM as she swam 2:19.33 in the finals after going 2:18.49 in the preliminaries. She later finished second in the 400 IM at 4:52.12 and then swam on the 800 freestyle relay that placed third (8:22.43), the 400 medley relay that was third (4:18.52) and the 400 freestyle team the finished fifth (3:53.01).
Kirschenbaum earns his second Athlete of the Week honor after helping the Red Hawks to the second round of the NCAA Division III Playoffs following a 16-14 win at Hampden-Sydney. He finished the contest with eight tackles, including six solo stops, two tackles for a loss, and a sack. Kirschenbaum came up with two huge plays as his sack for 13 yards forced the Tigers into a field goal attempt that went wide allowing MSU to hold a 10-0 lead at halftime. In the second half after Hampden-Sydney drove to the Montclair 1, Kirschenbaum forced a fumble that was recovered by the Red Hawks for a touchback as Montclair maintained its 10-0 lead. A first-team all-conference selection, Kirschenbaum, who also reached 100 tackles for the season, currently ranks fourth in the NJAC in tackles with an average of 9.1 per game.
