Men's Basketball Pulls Away From Berkeley in Home Opener, 65-49

Montclair, NJ (11/23/10) – Junior forward Andrew August (Bridgewater, NJ / Bridgewater-Raritan) scored 23 points and pulled down five rebounds while Tyrone Prewitt (Trenton, NJ / Trenton) added 15 points and five rebounds off the bench as Montclair State fought off Berkeley College for a 65-49 victory in its home opener at the Panzer Athletic Center on Tuesday evening.

Sophomore guard Andrew Larkin (Passaic, NJ / St. Mary’s (Rutherford)) added 13 points and five rebounds as the Red Hawks overcame an early eight point deficit to improve to 2-1 on the season.

Sophomore guard Gary Williams, Jr. (Jersey City, NJ / Marist) had 13 points and Brandon Stewart (Somerville, NJ / Somerville) 11 for the Knights, who fell to 1-4 on the season.

Montclair’s Tom Bonard (Westfield, NJ / Westfield) sank a three-pointer to give MSU a 3-0 lead 1:57 into the contest however Berkeley went on a 12-2 run over the next six minutes to take a seven-point  lead. Andre Javis (Hillside, NJ / Union) sank a short jumper as the Knights led 12-5 with 13:40 to play in the first half.

Another jumper by Javis gave Berkeley its largest lead at 14-6, but the Red Hawks countered with a 19-4 run to take the lead for good. Larkin started it off with a three-pointer and a layup by August knotted the score at 16-16. After the teams traded baskets, Larkin hit another three as Montclair jumped in front 21-8 with 7:03 remaining.

August scored the next four and Prewitt added a bucket to cap the run as MSU took a 27-18 lead which it maintained over the final five minutes en route to a 33-24 lead at the break. 

The Knights did back down and trimmed the deficit to a point in the opening three-plus minutes. Javis had a three-point play and Stewart’s three-point made the score 35-34 with 16:45 left. Montclair was able to pull away again with a12-2 run over the next five minutes to take a 47-36 lead on a layup by Prewitt with 11:07 to go. 

August and Prewitt each had three assists in the contest with Prewitt collecting a pair of blocked shots. Freshman guardMichael Price (Plainfield, NJ / Plainfield) contributed five points, three rebounds, five assists and three steals off the bench. The Red Hawks shot a solid 69 percent from the field in the final 20 minutes and finished 23-of-41 (56 percent) from the floor for the game.

Javis had seven points as did Justin Lewandowski (Bordentown, NJ / Bordentown Regional). Donovan Black (Morristown, NJ / Morristown) led all Knights rebounders with six caroms. 

Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, November 27 as the Red Hawks travel to Hackettstown, NJ to face Centenary College at 2:00 pm.
