Montclair, NJ (12/1/10) – The Montclair State Department of Athletics has announced the hiring of Adam Torrisi as interim head men’s lacrosse coach. Torrisi becomes the seventh head coach in the history of the program and takes over for the late John Greco, who passed away in early November. Torrisi had been named Associate Head Coach in September.
“While I am pleased to have this opportunity, it is under the most unfortunate of circumstances,” said Torrisi. “I look forward to leading our team into what I am sure will be a challenging season. I am confident that our kids will respond positively and make this an especially meaningful year.”
Torrisi takes over a program that he has been associated with for the past 13 years as both a player and a coach. A three-year starter as an attackman, Torrisi capped off his career in the 2000 season scoring 24 goals and amassing 32 points in helping Montclair State to a 9-5 record. Following his graduation from MSU in 2000 with his degree in Political Science, Torrisi spent the 2001 and 2002 seasons as an assistant lacrosse coach at Newark Academy in Livingston, NJ.
He returned to Montclair State in August as an assistant coach, joining former teammate Greco and turned Montclair State into one of the premier programs in both the Knickerbocker/Skyline Conferences as well as the Metro region. During his time on the staff, the Red Hawks appeared in five championship contests, winning three straight ECAC titles (2003-05) and Skyline Conference crowns in each of the past two seasons. Montclair also made the only two appearances in the NCAA Division III Championship in program history in 2009 and 2010. MSU finished the 2010 campaign ranked No. 19 by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA).
In addition to the team success, Torrisi helped Montclair State produce five USILA All-Americans and over 40 Skyline All-Conference selections as well as four league Rookies of the Year. Each year, the Red Hawks boasted one of the top scoring offenses in the Skyline Conference and ranked in the Top 20 in the national several times.
“Adam Torrisi is the logical choice to lead our men's lacrosse team this spring,” said Director of Athletic Holly Gera. “He has a great lacrosse background and has been on our coaching staff since 2002. “Coach Greco named him associate head coach for the upcoming season, in recognition of his commitment and involvement with the program. Adam has been an anchor for the team during this very sad and difficult time and will continue to provide our student athletes guidance and direction in the months to come. I look forward to working with him in this new capacity.”
While at Newark Academy, Torrisi helped turnaround a lacrosse program that had won five games in the three years prior to his arrival. In his first year, Newark Academy improved to a .500 record and the following year went 13-5 reaching the State Prep B Championship game. Eight players were named All-Conference in those two seasons and five athletes went on to play at the NCAA Division I level.
A native of nearby Clifton, NJ, Torrisi currently serves as a seventh grade Social Studies teacher at William Annin Middle School in Bernards Township, NJ after spending six years in the same capacity at Woodrow Wilson Middle School in his hometown. He also spent two years as Assistant Director of Alumni Relations for Regional Clubs and Outreach Programs at Rutgers University.
