Three Montclair State University Students have been awarded the prestigious and competitive Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to study abroad this spring 2011 semester. The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Programs provides up to $5,000 to apply to the costs of studying abroad and a limited number of Critical Need Language Scholarships are also awarded for a possible total award of up to $8,000. Gilman Scholars are selected based on the student’s academic performance, statement of purpose and follow-on project proposal.
The Gilman Scholarship Program is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students receiving a PELL grant who are planning to study abroad. It aims to diversify the kinds of students who study abroad and the destinations where they go by supporting undergraduates who might otherwise not participate due to financial constraints. The program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Institute of International Education.
The Montclair State University Gilman Scholarship recipients studying abroad this spring include:
Giancarlo Bruno, Filmmaking, who will study at Kingston University in the United Kingdom
Lorena Lima, Business Administration-concentration Marketing, who will study at Autonomous University of Barcelona in Spain
Kulsoom Rizvi, History, who will study at University of Graz in Austria
The staff at the Global Education Center is extremely proud of our students and pleased that we have seen the number of students who applied for and received the Gilman scholarship increase this semester. Through targeted outreach and partnership with the Office of Financial Aid, we hope to make the Montclair State community aware of this and other great scholarships available to help students study abroad.
The deadline for eligible students interested in studying abroad in the fall 2011 or summer 2011 semesters is March 1, 2011. Students interested in studying abroad should contact the Global Education Center at 973 655 4216, attend an information session and visit the webpage at www.montclair.edu/globaled/studyabroad.
