Rochester, NY (12/18/10) – Junior Andrew August (Bridgewater, NJ / Bridgewater-Raritan) scored 20 points and was named Most Valuable Player as Montclair State captured the Harold J. Brodie Tournament on Saturday with a 66-63 victory over host Rochester Institute of Technology at the Clark Gymnasium.
Senior guard Rodney Freeney (Piscataway, NJ / Piscataway) added 14 points and three steals and was named to the All-Tournament Team as the Red Hawks won their 10th straight game improving to 10-1. It is the longest winning streak for MSU since it won 12 in a row to open the 2002-03 campaign.
RIT led by seven points midway through the first half, but Montclair State closed out the half on a 17-6 run to take a 35-33 lead into halftime. August had eight points in the run while Charles Miller (Linden, NJ / Linden) and A.J. Larkin (Passaic, NJ / St. Mary's) each had four.
August paced the Red Hawks with 16 first-half points and grabbed four rebounds.
Montclair extended its lead to six points early in the second half on a layup by Sean Young (Scotch Plains, NJ / SP-Fanwood). With 10:14 remaining in the second half, August's layup gave the Red Hawks a 56-51 lead.
RIT ran off four straight points, tying the game at 56-56 on a made free throw by Nate Korinchak (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville) with 7:45 to play. Korinchak had a solid second half, finishing with five points, three rebounds, two assists and three steals.
Montclair State outscored RIT 6-2 over a 4:05 span to take a six-point lead on a layup by Tyrone Prewitt (Trenton, NJ / Trenton Central). A layup by Rochester Tech with 2:46 to play made it a four point lead.
After a pair of August free throws bumped the lead back to six points, Brendan Harder (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta)'s layup with 1:05 to play cut the lead back to four. He completed the traditional three-point play with a free throw to make it 66-63 Montclair State.
Larkin missed the front end of a one-and-one, giving RIT a chance to tie with seven seconds remaining.
Harder's three-pointer from the top of the circle was blocked by Miller. Justin Heisig got the rebound, but his shot fell short giving the Red Hawks the win.
Larkin added 10 points for Montclair State.
Montclair State is now off until Sunday, January 2, 2011 when they face Eastern University at 5:00 pm in the opening round of the PNC Classic at the University of Scranton. The championship/consolation games of the tournament are slated for Monday, January 3.
