Scranton, PA (1/2/11) – Junior Andrew August (Bridgewater, NJ / Bridgewater-Raritan) and senior guard Tom Bonard (Westfield, NJ / Westfield) each scored 15 points, however Montclair State's 10-game winning streak came to an end as the Red Hawks were upended by Eastern University in the PNC Bank Classic, 70-62 at the University of Scranton's Long Center on Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore guard A.J. Larkin (Passaic, NJ / St. Mary's) added 13 points and five assists as the Red Hawks (10-2) fell for the first time since the season opener back on November 19 (57-56 loss to Salisbury at the Doc Greene Invitational at Juniata College). The win streak was the longest by Montclair since a 12-game run to open the 2002-03 campaign.
The Red Hawks will face Cazenovia in the consolation game of the tournament on Monday, January 3 at 2:00 pm.
A tight contest through the first half of the opening period, Montclair State took a 12-10 lead on a layup by Charles Miller (Linden, NJ / Linden) at the 10:01 mark. But the Eagles would score 15 of the next 16 points take a 25-13 lead with 6;19 to go before halftime en route to a 35-25 advantage at the break.
In the second half, Montclair would close to within three points as Rodney Freeney (Piscataway, NJ / Piscataway) hit a jumper with 16:10 left to make the score 39-36. That would be as close as the Red Hawks would get the rest of the way as Eastern quickly boosted the lead back to 10 points four minutes later.
