January 13, 2011—Art lovers can peruse more than 150 works of contemporary art in all media at the Art Connections 7 juried art exhibition and sale, to be held from January 18 to February 19, 2011 at Montclair State University’s George Segal Gallery.
The event showcases 126 up-and-coming and established artists from throughout the continental U.S., with the majority from New Jersey. Now in its seventh year, Art Connections has grown from a regional exhibition to one of national scope, and features such notable artists as sculptor Chakaia Booker, painter Susan Marx, sculptor Tom Nussbaum, and photographer Charles Bogusat. Prices for pieces range from $75-$12,000 and all proceeds go to support collections at the George Segal Gallery and the University’s permanent collection.
Lisa Suss, an arts activist and active professional artist, served as the juror for the exhibition. “I tried to pick a cross-section from each medium, but definitely considered the artistic merit of the individual pieces as well as their saleability,” she said. “My choices were basically subjective. Much of what I chose was because of my immediate reaction to the work.”
Suss chaired the West Orange Arts Council for eight years and is currently on the Board of Valley Arts. She is a juried member of Exhibitor’s Co-op, a well-known artists’ group which shows in New Jersey and surrounding states; a founding member of the Essex County Arts Advisory Board; and the Visual Arts Manager for JCC Metrowest.
An opening reception will be held from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, January 23, with many of the participating artists in attendance. The reception is open to the public.
Gallery hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Thursday from 12:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Entry is from the 4th floor of the Red Hawk Parking Deck adjacent to the Alexander Kasser Theater.
Free and open to the public, the exhibition is handicapped accessible.
