Basketball's Bonard, Track and Field's Gearity Named MSU Athletes of the Week

Montclair, NJ (1/31/11) - Basketball senior Tom Bonard (Westfield, NJ / Westfield) and indoor track and field sophomore Heather Gearity (Rutherford, NJ / Rutherford) were named Montclair State Athletes of the Week for January 31.

Gearity provided several highlights for the Red Hawk women’s indoor track and field team as they competed at the Terrier Classic in Boston last Friday. Gearity ran the third leg of the 4x400 relay team that finished eighth overall against the field comprised mainly of Division I and II participants. The relay squad posted a time of 4.00.33 falling just .83 seconds of recording an NCAA provisional qualifying mark. The time is currently the 10th-fastest in the nation this season. Gearity would lead a strong showing by the Red Hawks in the 400 meters as she won her heat with a time of 59.54 and finished 17th overall in the event. She added another win in her section of the 200 meters as she registered a time of 26.65 seconds.

Bonard scored 15 points, including four key free throws in the final minute to help the Red Hawks to their fourth straight victory, a 69-61 win at home against Richard Stockton. Bonard, who also collected two rebounds and two assists, shot 4-of-6 from the floor, including 3-of-4 from three-point range as Montclair State improved to 16-4 on the season. After Richard Stockton closed to within three points late in the game, Bonard was fouled and went to the line for a two shot foul with 48 seconds to go. He made the first and then the Stockton bench was assessed a technical foul. Bonard would hit both technical free throws as well as the second of his initial attempts restoring the MSU lead to 66-59. Bonard is averaging 7.4 points per game and has made a team-best 26 three-point field goals.
