Montclair, NJ (2/24/11) – Sophomore Heather Gearity (Rutherford, NJ / Rutherford) was named the Outstanding Female Track Athlete while freshman Krystal Ellis (Morristown, NJ / Morristown) was chosen Co-Rookie of the Year as the NJAC released its 2011 Indoor All-Conference Team on Thursday.
League all-conference honors were based on the results of the NJAC Indoor Track & Field Championships which were conducted at the New York Armory on February 20. All special awards were selected via a vote of the league’s head coaches.
Gearity was selected as the conference’s Outstanding Female Track Athlete after claiming the NJAC championship in the 400 meters with an NCAA provisional time of 57.97. She also competed as a member of MSU’s conference champion 4x400 meter relay which produced an NCAA provisional time of 3:57.89. In addition to competing in both the long jump and the high jump, Gearity also was a member of the Red Hawks’ 4x200 meter relay which placed second with an ECAC qualifying time of 1:44.70.
Ellis was chosen along with Rowan University freshman Jamie Thompson (Monmouth Junction, NJ/South Brunswick) were the two shared the Rookie of the Year honor. Ellis produced top three finishes in both the long jump and the 400 meters, in addition to competing on the Red Hawks’ NJAC champion 4x400 meter relay which produced an NCAA provisional time of 3:57.89.
Ashley Powell (Orange, NJ / Marylawn of the Oranges) earned All-Conference accolades in two events as she finished third in the 200 meters and also ran on the 4x200 relay. Sophomore Ashadaya Patterson (Trenton, NJ / Northern Burlington) earned honors after competing on both relays while Michelle McNulty (Bayonne, NJ / Bayonne)and Hannah Campbell (Forked River, NJ / Lacey Township) were parts of the 4x400 and 4x200 relays, respectively.
