Montclair, NJ (3/7/11) - Junior baseball catcher Kevin Bond (Cedar Grove, NJ / Cedar Grove) and sophomoreHeather Gearity (Rutherford, NJ / Rutherford) have been named the MSU Athletes of the Week for March 7.
Bond helped Montclair State off to a 2-0 start as the Red Hawks won both of their games in Georgia over the weekend. Bond was 3-for-5 and had a two-run triple in an eight-run 8th inning as MSU broke open a one-run contest in a 14-5 win over Rhodes College. Two days later, he belted his 17th career home run, a two-run shot, as the Red Hawks jumped out to a 3-0 lead en route to a 4-3 victory over Piedmont College. Bond, who went 5-for-7 at the plate (.571) with three runs scored, had an on-base percentage of .667 and a slugging average of 1.286 for the weekend.
Gearity is honored for the second straight week and third time this year after posting an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the pentathlon at the Columbia Last Chance Meet held at the Armory on Saturday. Gearity, who earlier this season missed the qualifying mark by five points, broke the necessary 3,000-point barrier with a personal-best 3,095 points. She ran 9.78 seconds in the 60 meter hurdles and then high jumped 1.52 meters. She would set a personal best in the shot put at 7.93 meters and added a mark of 4.96 in the long jump before wrapping up her competition with a personal-best 2:25.19 in the 800 meters. Gearity, who was named the NJAC Outstanding Track Athlete in February, became the second Red Hawk to post an NCAA provisional mark in the event this season.
