Women's Lacrosse Edges Scranton 15-13 for First Win of 2011

Montclair, NJ (3/8/11) – Senior midfielder Kayla Henderson (Landing, NJ / Roxbury) and junior Cora Delfini (New Egypt, NJ / New Egypt) each scored five goals as Montclair State picked up its first victory of the season edging University of Scranton, 15-13 at Sprague Field on Tuesday evening.

Sophomore Kailee Beal (Landing, NJ / Roxbury) added three goals and senior Meghan Spitzer (Mount Olive, NJ / Mount Olive) handed out four assists as the Red Hawks squandered a four-goal halftime lead before rebounding for the win improving to 1-2 on the season.

Freshman attack Kerry Sullivan (Oceanport, NJ / Shore Regional) registered five goals for Scranton, which nearly pulled off the comeback before falling to 0-2 on the year.

After trading the first 10 goals of the game, Montclair State used a four-goal run to build a 9-5 lead with just over five minutes to go before halftime. Henderson had three of those scored, including the final tally on a free position attempt with 5:26 left.  Scranton would answer with goals from Kaela Mahon (Avon-by-the-Sea, NJ / St. Rose) and Katie Slade (Buckingham, PA / Central Bucks West) to cut the lead to 9-7 however, Delfini, Henderson and Beal each scored to boost the Montclair lead to 12-7 with 2:40 to play. 

The Lady Royals’ Christie Taylor (Sparta, NJ / Sparta) scored with 14 seconds left before halftime, a goal that would spark a five-goal run by Scranton that eventually tied the game in the second half. Sullivan had two goals in the run, the last with 15:06 on the clock knotting the game at 12-12. 

Montclair would regain the lead on Stephanie Cantillo’s (Clifton, NJ / Clifton) free-position goal with 12:15 left but Sullivan countered for the Royals with 7:10 showing as the game was deadlocked at 13-13. MSU would win the ensuing draw and capitalize on the possession as Spitzer found Henderson in front for the goal and a 14-13 MSU lead with 6:30 to go. 

Delfini would add what turned out to be an insurance goal with 3:53 remaining, and goalkeeper Tiffani Henderson(Landing, NJ / Roxbury) came up with a huge save on the other end to preserve the two-goal lead with three minutes left. 

Tiffani Henderson finished with 15 saves for Montclair, which got seven draws, two ground balls and two caused turnovers from Delfini. Beal had six draws and defenders Sara Watson (Medford Lakes, NJ / Shawnee) and Kristin Quigley (Mount Laurel, NJ / Lenape) combined on nine ground balls. Kayla Henderson also registered four ground balls in the victory. 

Jilliana DePaolera (Kinnelon, NJ / Kinnelon) had f goal, three assists, two draws, three caused turnovers and five ground balls for Scranton, which outshot Montclair 36-30. Kathleen Smart (Hatboro, PA / Archbishop Wood) made 10 saves for the Lady Royals.

The Red Hawks are back in action on Thursday, March 10 as they head to Madison, NJ to face FDU-Florham at 4:00 pm. The Lady Royals remain on the road with a March 12th contest at Elmira College beginning at 12:00 pm.
