Kissimmee, FL (3/13/11) - Freshman righthander Alex Hill (Parsippany, NJ / Parsippany Hills)
tossed a no-hitter in her collegiate start as Montclair State blanked
Roger Williams, 8-0 to earn a split of its first two contests of the
2011 season at the Rebel Spring Games on Sunday afternoon.
Senior Leslie Gonzalez (North Bergen, NJ / North Bergen) and junior Shannon Mozek (Wayne, NJ / Wayne)
combined for six hits, four runs scored and five stolen bases for the
Red Hawks, who dropped their first game of the day to Millikin
University, 7-2.
Hill face just one batter over the minimum in the five-inning
contest. She struck out eight and also helped herself at the plate
going 1-for-3. Hill struck out the side in her first college inning of
work and then walked the leadoff hitter to open the second. She would
retire the final 10 hitters to earn her first career win.
Hill got the offensive support she needed in the third inning as MSU
plated seven runs to break a scoreless tie. Mozek and Gonzalez opened
the inning with singles with Mozek moving to third on the latter hit.
The two would then execute a perfect double steal with Mozek swiping
home for the first run. Freshman catcher Liz Russo (Jackson, NJ / Liberty) made it 3-0 with a two-run homer and freshman Dana Amato’s (Hillsdale, NJ / Pascack Valley) two-run double pushed the lead 5-0. Senior Stephanie Szeliga (South Plainfield, NJ / South Plainfield)
also had an RBI and freshman Rebecca Vera (Roselle Park, NJ / Roselle
Park) capped off the inning with a run-scoring base hit through the
middle of infield.
All nine players in the MSU lineup had a hit as the Red Hawks collected nine in the game.
Against Millikin, Montclair took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the
first as Gonzalez singled with one out, went to second on a walk, stole
third and scored as Kelli O’Brien’s (Edison, NJ / Edison) ball was misplayed in the outfield.
Millikin would take the lead with two runs in the third, but
Montclair responded with a run in the bottom half of the frame as Russo
brought home Gonzalez with an infield single tying the game at 2-2.
Millkin then took the lead in the sixth with one run and scored four
times in the top of the seventh for the final margin.
Sophomore righthander Jamie Miller (Spotswood, NJ / St. John Vianney)
took the loss. Miller allowed seven hits and four runs (three earned)
in 5.1 innings, walking three and striking out three. Hill tossed the
final 1.2 innings giving up two hits and three runs (one earned) with
two strikeouts and a walk.
Mozek and Gonzalez had two hits each for Montclair.
Montclair returns to action on Monday, March 14 as they face Wheaton
(MA) College and Hood in back-to-back games at 3:00 and 5:00 pm,
respectively.
