Wheaton Box / Hood Box

Kissimmee, FL (3/14/11) – Freshman catcher Liz Russo (Jackson, NJ / Liberty) singled down the right field line with one out in the bottom of the seventh to plate the game-winning run as Montclair State capped off a sweep at the Rebel Spring Games on Monday with a 4-3 victory over Hood College. Earlier in the day the Red Hawks knocked off Wheaton College (MA), 6-2.

Freshman righthander Alex Hill (Parsippany, NJ / Parsippany Hills) earned the win in both games as Montclair extended its winning streak to three games and is now 3-1 overall.

In the victory over Hood, Montclair held leads of 1-0 and 3-2 before the Blazers tied the game in the top of the sixth. Brittany Sabol singled home one run to tie the game at 3-3. The Blazers could have taken the lead on the play however a perfect throw from centerfielder Leslie Gonzalez (North Bergen, NJ / North Bergen) to Russo nailed the potential go-ahead runner at the plate.

Hood threatened in the top of the seventh putting the first two runners on, but Hill pitched out of the jam giving the Red Hawks an opportunity to win the game in the bottom of the inning. Shannon Mozek (Wayne, NJ / Wayne Valley) walked to open the inning and a sacrifice by Gonzalez put Mozek in scoring position for Russo, who delivered the game-winning hit.

Hill, who was named the NJAC Rookie Pitcher of the Week earlier in the day, earned the win in relief tossing the final 1 1/3 innings allowing a hit. Sophomore righthander Jamie Miller (Spotswood, NJ / St. John Vianney) went the first 5 2/3 innings allowing three runs with two strikeouts and two walks.

Gonzalez finished 3-for-3 for Montclair State, which took a 1-0 lead in the second on an RBI by Priscilla Camacho(Jersey City, NJ / County Prep).  After Hood went up 2-1 in the third, the Red Hawks tied the game in the fourth as pinch-runner Jenna Sardone (Edison, NJ / Bishop Ahr) stole home on the front end of a double-steal.  Gonzalez then gave Montclair the 3-2 advantage in the fifth as she singled home Mozek, who had opened the inning by reaching on an error.

In the opener versus Wheaton, Montclair scored four times in the second to break a scoreless contest. Rebecca Vera(Roselle Park, NJ / Roselle Park) singled with the bases loaded to drive in the first run and an error on the play allowed the other two to score as MSU went up 3-0. Mozek added the other run with an RBI single.

Mozek would collect a second RBI in the fourth inning and a run driven by Gonzalez on a fielder’s choice pushed the lead to 6-0.

Hill picked up the win as she went the first five innings allowing seven hits and two runs, striking out four and walking two. Miller finished up with two scoreless innings of relief.

Heather Bergman (Berkeley Heights, NJ / Gov. Livingston) was 3-for-3 with two runs scored while Mozek and Kelli O’Brien (Edison, NJ / Edison) each had two hits.

MSU returns to action at the Rebel Spring Games on Wednesday, March 16 as they face Endicott College and Carthage College at 11:00 am and 1:00 pm, respectively.
