Kissimmee, FL (3/16/11) – Sophomore righthander Jamie Miller (Spotswood, NJ / St. John Vianney) tossed a three-hitter for her first victory of the season as Montclair State returned from its one-day hiatus for a split of contests at the Rebel Spring Games on Wednesday afternoon. MSU (4-2) was blanked by Endicott College, 2-0 earlier in the day before bouncing back with a 4-1 victory over Carthage College.

In the loss to Endicott, the Red Hawks collected six hits, but could not find they key as Jenna Bortolotti picked up the shutout, striking out three and walking two. Freshman righthander Alex Hill (Parsippany, NJ / Parsippany Hills) took the hard-luck loss to fall to 3-1. Hill allowed six hits and two unearned runs, striking out seven and walking two.

Endicott would get the only two runs in the game in the top of the second inning. After allowing a leadoff single, Hill retired the next two batters before issuing a walk and illegal pitch to put runners on the corners. A misplayed ball in the outfield would allow both runners to score as Endicott led 2-0.

Montclair got a chance to break through in the sixth and seventh innings putting two runners aboard, however Bortolotti was able to retire the side for the victory.

Shannon Mozek (Wayne, NJ / Wayne Valley) and Leslie Gonzalez (North Bergen, NJ / North Bergen) each had two hits for Montclair State.

Miller helped the Red Hawks gain a split as she improved to 1-1 on the season, striking out two and walking two.

MSU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Dana Amato (Hillsdale, NJ / Pascack Valley) doubled with two outs scoring Mozek, who led off the game with a walk.

Carthage would tie the game in the bottom of the fourth however Montclair answered immediately in the top of the fifth as Kelli O'Brien (Edison, NJ / Edison) belted a one-out double scoring Liz Russo (Jackson, NJ / Liberty) as the Red Hawks went up 2-1.

Montclair would add two insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Gonzalez led off with a single, stole second with one out and moved to third on a ground out. Amato singled down the right field line for the first run and Heather Bergman(Berkeley Heights, NJ / Gov. Livingston) added an RBI single scoring pinch runner Briana Rossi (Parsippany, NJ / Parsippany) for the 4-1 advantage.

Amato, Bergman and Katie Muglia (South Plainfield, NJ / South Plainfield) had two hits apiece for the Red Hawks.

Montclair State returns to action on Thursday, March 17 as they face Farmingdale State and Springfield College at 11:00 am and 1:00 pm, respectively.
