Box Score

New Concord, OH (3/25/11) – On Thursday, the Montclair State baseball team traveled seven hours for its game with Muskingum University. On Friday, it took nearly that long for the Red Hawks and Big Red to play that contest.

After forcing extra-innings with three runs in the bottom of the ninth, Muskingum manufactured a run with two outs in the bottom of the 15th for a 6-5 win over MSU in the Muskingum Invite at Mose Morehead Field. J.P. Finnicum singled home Darren Garrett from second base for the game-winning run as Montclair's three-game winning streak came to an end as the Red Hawks fell to 6-3.

Montclair State took a 2-0 lead in the second innings as Jason Chesterman (Bloomfield, NJ / Bloomfield) doubled in a run and later scored on a balk giving MSU its two-run advantage. Muskingum got a run back in the bottom of the sixth to cut the deficit in half, however, Montclair answered in the top of the seventh with a run as Andrew Himmelfarb (Nyack, NY / Nyack) scored on an error for a 3-1 lead.

MSU added two more in the top of the eighth inning as Bowens blasted a two-run shot, his first career homer as Montclair State extended its lead to 5-1. The Big Red got a home run of its own in the bottom half to make the score 5-2 and then got the three runs in the ninth to force the extra innings.

Despite getting runners on base and into scoring position, neither team could find the key hit until the 15th inning. After retiring the first two hitters, Garrett singled and stole second. Finnicum then lined a base hit to left field for the winning run as Muskingum (5-9) came away with the victory.

Lost in the extra-inning affair was the solid start by freshman lefthander Dylan Papa (South Plainfield, NJ / South Plainfield). Papa went 7.2 innings allowing two runs and five hits, striking out two while not walking a batter. Freshman Jesse Campanelli (Rahway, NJ / Rahway) took the loss, his first decision of the year (0-1)

Montclair, which stranded 14 runners on base in the game, had 10 hits by 10 different players in the contest.

The Red Hawks are back in action on Saturday, march 26 as they take on John Carroll University in the Muskingum Invite at 12:00 pm.
