Montclair, NJ (3/30/11) – Senior defender Anthony Dzienkiewicz (Jackson, NJ / Jackson Memorial) scored late in the third quarter to spark a four-goal run by Montclair State as the Red Hawks snapped their three-game losing streak with a 6-3 win over Drew University at Sprague Field on Wednesday evening.
Junior midfielder Thomas Ring (Nutley, NJ / Nutley) scored twice while senior Bobby Sinicola (North Caldwell, NJ / West Essex) scored once and assisted on two others as MSU upped its record to 3-5 on the season.
Sophomore Scott Humphreys (Wilmington, DE / Sanford School) had a goal and assist for th Rangers, who had their two-game win streak halted. Drew is now 4-3 on the season.
A tight defensive into the third quarter, the Rangers tied the game at 2-2 with 5:35 to play as Mark Barus (jacobstown, NJ / Notre Dame) scored on an unassisted tally. Two minutes later, Montclair would retake the lead in a wild exchange of possessions.
Rangers' keeper Charlie DeSocio (Maplewood, NJ / Columbia) made a save on a shot by MSU's Tyler Meth (Basking Ridge, NJ / Ridge). On the clear attempt, DeSocio carried the ball all the way to the opposite end before turning it over. With DeSocio way out of position, Montclair, which was already on the man-advantage, raced back up the field. Dzienkiewicz carried the ball nearly 30 yards across midfield before firing a shot from 20 yards out into the back of the net as the Red Hawks took a 3-2 lead.
MSU held the advantage into the fourth where it scored three times in just over three minutes. Sinicola finished off a perfect fast-break by MSU off a failed clear with 10:39 left and freshman Anthony Rybek's (Old Bridge, NJ / Old Bridge) goal with 8:31 to play made the score 5-2. Ring collected his second just over a minute later as MSU expanded its lead to three goals.
Humphreys got one back for the Rangers, however that would be as close as they would get.
Dzienkiewcz added six ground balls and four caused turnovers to complete his brilliant game. Goalkeeper Mark Glander(Vernon, NJ / Vernon) stopped 12 stots and added five ground balls while Dustin Malaszuk (Clifton, NJ / Clifton)added four ground balls and two caused turnovers.
DeSocio made 17 saves for Drew, which was outshots in the game 38-23. Faceoff specialist Sean McGowan (Milltown, NJ / St. Joseph) was 9-of-13 with seven ground balls in the game.
The Red Hawks are now off until Wendesday, April 6 as they open defense of the Skyline Conference championship. Montclair State, which has won the past two Skyline crowns, faces Farmingdale State on Long Island at 4:00 pm. Drew remains on the road heading to Washington D.C. on Saturday, April 2 for a 1:00 pm Landmark Conference contest at Catholic University.
